Punk Rock BBQ @ Liquid Kitty 2/27/09

Today’s budget-conscious music lover has a good home at the bi-annual Liquid Kitty Punk Rock Barbecue. Where else but this Westside alterna-bar can one experience awesomely rocking bands for no cover, gobble free hotdogs from the sidewalk grill, and gulp $2 Pabsts?

Last Sunday afternoon’s edition of the LKPRBBQ featured four very different groups. Unfortunately, headlining hard-core legends The Stains cancelled at the last moment. But who cares when you’ve got: Toothcore, enacting goofy, one-minute, three-chord wonders; Carnage Asada, gleeful punk/funk made massive by a rhythm section of two bassists, plus electric cello; Biblical Proof of UFOs, seriously enjoyable space rock with a conceptual edge (BPUFO’s one cover song was “4:33,” avant-garde composer John Cage’s 4.5 minutes of silence… the band simply stopped playing for the duration); and last but most, The Bob Lee.

These days the exuberant singer and his super-solid band perform classic punk and metal covers. On Sunday it was the entire Fun House album by Iggy and the Stooges. This isn’t the astonishing Stooges simulation of local tribute band Raw Power Rangers (with Don Bolles on drums and The Insect Surfer’s Dave Arnson channeling Iggy), but The Bob Lee still made Liquid Kitty a full-on Fun House.

So much better than the pre-oscars hoo ha....we had our own floor show, top hat and tails going down.

Great to see Carnage and The Bob was a dee-light.

Am liking them Omen-tinis a lot.
