LABOR DISCUSSION
Los Angeles Times Editorial Board Member John Healey moderates the Zócalo discussion “How Will Labor Discord Change Hollywood?” tonight at 7:30 pm at the ArcLight Sherman Oaks. Zócalo’s panel of Hollywood and high-tech experts will explore why talent unions are having so much trouble reaching a deal with the studios, what it means for talent unions in future negotiations, and how Hollywood will fare during the economic crisis and in its transition to the digital age. The event is free, but reservations are recommended.
STORIES
The monthly Moth StorySLAM is so hot that there’s now a Westside edition. Tonight from 7-9:30 pm, storytellers take to the mic at the Air Conditioned Supper Club, focusing on the theme of "Blunders." The stories are scored by three teams of audience-member judges, and a winner is announced at every SLAM. SLAM winners later face off in a Moth Grand SLAM. Tickets are $6.
VAUDEVILLE BENEFIT*
Tiny Vaudeville, 826LA's launched variety show at the Echoplex, features features live music, comedy, lectures, slide shows and film screenings among its assorted specialty acts. Aaron Ginsberg directs this month's installment, which includes comedy by Saturday Night Live alum Laraine Newman, music by Maria Taylor, and something called "melodious cutlery" with Jeremy Konner. The evening's already-whimsical lineup is capped off by readings of works by the young students of 826LA. The evening’s hosted by Joel Spence and Marc Evan Jackson.
ART TALK
The Hammer Museum presents “Conscientious Consumption: Sustainability and the Future of Luxury” tonight at 7 pm. Sally Singer, the fashion news and features director of Vogue, asks four leading LA designers about their strategies, aesthetics and philosophies in response to the economic downturn. What’s the modern relationship between the ethical and the luxurious (for designer and consumer)? Singer will be joined by renowned jewelry designer Tom Binns; the "Godfather of Denim" and Goldsign designer, Adriano Goldschmied; Dosa founder and designer, Christina Kim; and Kate Mulleavy, one of the design duo behind Rodarte.The discussion will be followed by a Q & A session.
