LA Radio Heading Toward The Sh*tter, Says Adam Carolla

LA Radio Heading Toward The Shitter, Says Adam Carolla by Caleb Bacon

Gone from KLSX 97.1 FM, Adam Carolla has taken to the Internet. The North Hollywood-native’s first podcast was released today. It spanned a commercial-free 37 minutes. This begins Carolla's promised Monday - Friday daily podcast.

CBS Radio, parent of KLSX, turned their FM talk station to Top 40 last Friday at 5 p.m. On his podcast, Carolla says the reason was reflective of “the economic times we’re in. It costs too much to pay a bunch of guys to talk verse playing Justin Timberlake records.” Carolla believes LA radio is in a general sad state. “I think terrestrial radio’s heading toward the shitter, at least out here in LA. It’s pretty much Ranchero music, Top 40, and hot-bullshit-talk."

Carolla says “The Adam Carolla Show” was doing well despite their station's cancellation. “Obviously we did alright with our target demographic, or I wouldn’t keep getting bonuses from Los Angeles and all the affiliates we were in,” he says of his ratings. His popular KLSX morning show featured witty co-host Teresa Strasser and sound effects genius Bald Bryan Bishop.

The Future = Radio + Television

“Right now I want to be a shot of methadone while we get this progress, while we explore this new frontier," Carolla says of not abandoning his listeners. Recorded Sunday night, post-Oscars, Carolla used his inaugural podcast to speak on humorous topics in the rant-style for which he is perhaps best known. Despite a somewhat quiet audio quality, the inaugural podcast was free of significant technical difficulty. “We’re going to get guests in here. We’ll probably get a studio setup."

In addition to this podcast Carolla will be filming a pilot for CBS. He says it’ll be a “prime-time sitcom on CBS, the number one network for doing sitcoms.” He wrote the script with The Hammer collaborator Kevin Hench. “We’re starting on this thing ASAP.” He hopes to use this new show as a place of employment for many who were fired with KLSX's format change.

Carolla Wants You

Throughout the podcast, Carolla stressed that his entry into new media will not be a solo effort. He invites his listeners to get involved. “Post the questions on the messageboard, throw out some topics, throw out some stories, throw out some questions, ask my advice, throw it up there,” he asks. “I’ll address it.”

“I’m in it for the big picture, and I’m in it for the long-term,” Carolla says of his investment in podcasting. “Do not dip into your wallet, do not even dip into your heart. All you need to do is spread it around. We will create something together.”

The new podcast is amazing. The content Adam is planning to provide will be the best in podcasting for 2009 and on, and the potential to go beyond even those high expectations is immeasurable.

Everyone should listen to Adam's podcast. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I don't get why you need radio for Top 40 crap.

Can't you just download that and press repeat?

New indie music...that makes sense, new talk radio...makes sense. Top 40? wtf.

Well, we were definitely lacking in the Top 40 sector. We NEED another Top 40 station in LA. I can only get Britney Spears on what, 4 stations now? Must have more!

Since terrestrial radio is clearly heading over a cliff, I'm wondering if Carolla has been offered a job working with his friend Howard Stern on Sirius. A censor-free Carolla would make for an interesting listening...

On this same podcast Carolla says that Satellite is already "in the shitter."

Why i will not listen to Adam Corolla's podcast is the same reason i don't listen to ANY podcasts.

Radio takes the least amount of effort, and is the easiest to access.

I really tried to love satellite radio, but it's a hassle. Not only is it an additional monthly expense, but unless you are in YOUR car you won't be able to hear the great programming.

I really tried to enjoy podcasts, but they're an even bigger hassle than satellite radio. With all the syncing i'd have to do to have fresh content everyday, it's like having a second job.

I have resorted now to listening to KNX 1070AM, and KFWB 980AM... at least i'll know where all the SIG-ALERTS are.

And Adam has it wrong... LA Radio is not headed for the shitter, it is already there.

Hey, the podcast is actually the easiest form of entertainment in audio to access. It's free, and all you do is click one link and it's downloading on your comp. You don't need to sync any iTunes, just drag and drop the thing into your iPod from the desktop.

Have faith.

I agree with Anti, podcasts do take the extra effort and I haven't found a working system personally to use it on a consistent basis. However, I love to listen casually late at night and while doing dishes, etc.

carolla's the only guy in the entire media universe with balls big enough to speak his mind about the state of LA and other controversial issues nobody else wants to touch with a 10 ft. pole.

i'm glad he's podcasting and i will for sure keep listening. i'm just bummed we don't get teresa and bald brian anymore.

i wish a station in LA or even San Diego would take a chance and give these guys their deserved spot back on the radio...the ratings were there and you know all their former affiliates would follow suit.

OMG i just listened to the new station amp radio. All i can say is horrible. Who's picking this music line up? I'd rather listen to Kiss FM *barf*

I'm the superfan, of course I will listen.

Wait a second here - Carolla gets laid off, then says LA radio sucks, and suddenly he's a hero? Where have you people been for the last 10 years?

I think Carolla is incredibly funny, but I've never dug him as a radio host - but he's an awesome character guy. I know its tough to go from being the topliner to anything else, but Carolla would be well served to return to his roots... which hopefully will happen with his sitcom.

Carolla at his best is with improvised, unscripted radio. Give his new podcast a try.
