Box Office Review: Jason is Back, Still Annoyed...

In yet more disquieting economic news, the re-boot of the Friday the 13th franchise enjoyed a record-breaking weekend at the box-office. The stale re-make tallied a staggering $42.2M in its debut which should insure a steady stream of more awful retreads in the future. He Just Wants To Sleep With You placed a distant second with $19.6M ($55M) just ahead of the resilient Taken which brought in another $19.2M ($77.9M). In what had to be a let-down for Disney considering the presumed built-in audience, Confessions of a Shopaholic opened weakly with $15.4M and may eventually be overcome by the splendiferous Coraline ($15.3M/$35.5M).

The second half of the top 10 was led by the hugely successful, completely moronic Paul Blart: Professional Fatso ($11.7M/$110.5M). After that it was the generically stylish newcomer The International ($10M); the apocalyptic The Pink Panther 2: The End of Steve Martin ($9M/$22.3M); the virtually certain winner of this year's Best Picture Oscar Slumdog Millionaire ($7.1M/$86.5M) and the who-exactly-thought-this-was-a-good-idea Push ($6.9M/$19.3M). The limited release crowd was sparse this weekend. Only the sumptuous, visually stunning Under the Sea 3D made any sort of impression ($13,265 per theater).
