Pencil This In: Do we really need a downtown?

CalArts President Steven D. Levine invites a distinguished panel of speakers to discuss the need for a downtown district in L.A. A topic equally applicable to many major cities, the panel will examine the value of central downtown districts when we live in such a digitally connected World that seems to negate its need. Ironically, the event takes place downtown at the REDCAT. Discussion starts at 8:30 pm.

There is only a few more days left for you to catch a flick at the Pan-African Film Festival, hosted at various venues throughout the city. Billed as America's largest black film festival, it features more than 150 movies from throughout the World, including Canada, Africa, USA, Europe and South America, amongst others. Some highlights for tonight's screenings include: Disappearing Voices, Miracle at St. Anna, and Witness to a Dream. If you can't make it tonight, you have until February 16th.

ART
Warung Cafe and Heineken co-sponsor the opening of America at Phyllis Stein Art gallery. America features new works by Deborah Martin and are a reflection of Polaroid images captured on a 2007 road trip through the American South. Tonight is a preview night for collectors and the exhibit runs through March 7th.

PHOTOGRAPHY
Lot 44 Coffee hosts a photography exhibit by Graham Gilmore titled Shadow of Chernobyl. The photos depict the damage and destruction caused by the explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant over twenty years ago. Through February 22nd.
