Pencil This In: Frank Capra on Film, The Jazz Age on Stage

The Blank Theatre Company previews its new production The Jazz Age tonight and tomorrow at 8 pm. The play focuses on literary history’s most intriguing characters: F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway and Zelda Fitzgerald. “This sexy new play goes inside their minds to fantasize on the question of ‘inspiration.’” The production will have a live original score performed by Ian Whitcomb and his Bungalow Boys. The play’s regular run begins Thursday through March 22. Tickets are $22 for preview performances.

CalTech is celebrating the work of alumnus filmmaker Frank Capra. Tonight Capra’s 1948 film He Walked by Night screens at 8 pm at the Ramo Auditorium. This is the film that launched the Hollywood career of the LAPD - and helped Jack Webb develop Dragnet.Larry Mantle, host of 89.3 KPCC FM's daily Air Talk and weekly Film Week will moderate a panel discussion with Henry Sheehan, author Joe Domanick and Glynn Martin, executive director, LA Police Historical Society and a retired LAPD watch commander

What Happens When California’s Cash Runs Out?” is the topic of discussion tonight at Zócalo. Moderated by Joe Mathews, Irvine Senior Fellow, New America Foundation, the discussion will examine what happens when - not if - California runs out of money. The event begins at 7:30 pm tonight at the Los Angeles Central Library’s Mark Taper Auditorium. Reservations are strongly recommended.

Royal/T, the Culver City café/shop/art space, is celebrating Valentine’s Day all week. Beginning today through Friday, there are chocolate and wine pairings as well as tea and chocolate pairings available on the menu throughout the day. They’re open until 9 pm tonight.
