LAist Goes Shopping: Vintage Jewelry at The House of Love & Luck
LAist couldn't resist doing a little shopping at The House of Love and Luck on La Cienega just north of Largo at the Coronet. This gorgeous new vintage jewelry store opened six weeks ago. Walk inside to find a treasure trove of beautiful necklaces, rings, bracelets and more. Every item in the store is hand picked by owner Ricki Nolan. She has a great eye for spotting classic pieces that fit with currents styles. If you need something unique for your Valentine, this is the place.
LAist aksed Ricki Nolan about her new store and why she is so in love with vintage jewelry and accessories.
LAist: What is the general price range?
Ricki Nolan: $30-$400. Most pieces are around $80-$100. My goal is for the store to be the 'go to' place for cool, unique, statement pieces that have history and a story. I sell quality pieces at an affordable price.
Why vintage jewelry?
I have always been a bit obsessed with archaeology and digs. Finding old treasure that represent people, their time, and eras. This jewelry is a testament to how things were made. Many items have been on neck after neck and are still in perfect condition. I love the integrity of it, when you connect to that one special piece of jewelry. When its your and the only one like it. That's amazing.
LAist: What is your earliest memory of vintage jewelry?
Ricki Nolan: When I was sixteen and I finally got a car, I drove to the flea market. The Rose Bowl.
How do you choose what to sell?
Generally I carry what I feel is relevant in fashion today. I love big pendants. I love the 70's. Right now I am into western bolo ties.
Several pieces look like they are from the 20's and 40's.
20's and 40's flapper stuff is great for evening outfits. You don't have diamonds to stand out in a crowd.
Do you feel that people are buying less these days?
In this economy people aren't buying outfit after after outfit. Pair key accessories with white shirt and jeans, an evening dress, or work clothes. Vintage jewelry with a dress is a great option to update things you already own. Anything goes and long as it is in good shape and you feel it is relevant.
The House of Love and Luck also offers vintage jewelry repair and studio services. The store is located at 370 1/2 La Cienega.
