ART
Great murals have adorned L.A. streets for a number of years, some of which have historical significance beyond the image they convey. For example, the murals commemorating the 1984 Summer Olympics, one of which can be seen on the 5 south, just before the 110 exit. During the 1994 World Cup, 24 murals were strewn about the city to honor the 24 participating nations, and of course, East L.A. has a number of great murals. Cal State L.A.'s art gallery has put together a photo-documentary exhibit of various murals from throughout the L.A. area, saving you the need to drive around all over town to enjoy them. Exhibit runs through February 28th.

TALK
Poetry aficionados may wish to consider listening to Professor Lauri Ramey's discussion relating to a couple of her books: The Heritage Series of Black Poetry 1962-1977 and Slave Songs and the Birth of African American Poetry. In addition to covering the broader topic of poetry, Ramey's discussion will also highlight the often overlooked and unexplored connection between slave songs and American literature. Discussion starts at 6 pm.

THEATRE
Kathleen F. Conlin directs Candida at the Colony Theatre. Written by George Bernard Shaw, the comedy revolves around Candida's love triangle and her struggle to choose between one of two men. Through March 8th.

FILM
Downtown Independent is screening Todd Rohal's 2006 flick, The Guatemalan Handshake. An oddly titled work, the movie's plot is equally curious. The plot follows the effects of a series of unexpected and unusual events upon a small town's community, originally stemming from a mysterious power outage and simultaneous disappearance of the town's most eccentric inhabitant.
