Latina Dance Festival!

The smart and strong women of the Latina Dance Project have re-united and return to share more stories in Embodying Borders. Part of a weekend Festival de Latinas Bailando/Festival of Latinas Dancing, this evening is made of solos created and performed by the company’s core members: Licia Perea, Eluza Santos, Juanita Suarez and Eva Tessler. Musical guest and east LA alternative music scene pioneer Lysa Flores and her trio will also join them.
Promotional material states that the solos explore different aspects of what it is to be a Latina, from being a legal alien, “psychopomps” (pompous people), a grandmother turning 100 and some other improvisational surprises. Though last year’s show didn’t break any new ground theatrically, the opportunity to hear what these women have to say is one not to be missed!
This year, the company is sharing the weekend with Flamenco dancer Briseyda Zarate and her CompaÑia Alma y Corazon Flamenco. The eight dancers and musicians will present what is described as Zarate’s autobiographical testimony to her life’s passion, vulnerability, strength and beauty. Flamenca will be performed on Sunday at 7 pm.
