Cajun Seafood - Boiling crab

It was right after Chinese New Year that we came to Boiling Crab -- we were definitely in the mood for some steamin' cajun seafood. The slightly weird part of this, of course, is that we're in Alhambra, where Chinese food dominates. Yet despite -- or perhaps because -- Boiling Crab stands out from the glut of Chinese restaurants, it has garnered over 300 overwhelmingly positive reviews on yelp. The people here are similarly savvy hybrids. The staff and clientele are nearly all Asian, but everyone spoke perfect English.

So the idea is simple, pick your seafood (crabs, crab legs, crawfish, clams, shrimp,) pick your sauce (Ragin' Cajun, Lemon Pepper, garlic butter, or go crazy with all of the above) and your food will come to you in a plastic bag mixed with the sauce. The presentation is terrible and definitely not for the photographer in me, but the food is an entirely different story. There are also a smattering of sides and fried entrees if you don't want to get your hands too dirty -- but if that's your main concern, you're probably at the wrong place.

Service was decent, the young staff is friendly and on top of things. The atmosphere is relaxed and lively with quite a few large parties. I'd definitely be back when I feeling like having lots of shrimp and fried catfish... and fries... and corn, and sausages.

boiliing crab is bomb-deezy. 2-lbs crawfish, a dungeoness crab, and a order of catfish.

tip for the masses: to avoid lines go early. if you live close enough take it home. it'll be ready in 15 minutes and make sure you ask for parchment paper. the last step is key.

"The staff and clientele are nearly all Asian, but everyone spoke perfect English."

Wow...way to set Asians back 50 years. C'mon Kevin, you know better than that. Does it have to be so surprising that Asians can speak perfect English?

Stop being so lame. Most of the servers & owners of Asian restaurants in Monterey Park/Alhambra barely speak English. So yes, it is surprising.

That's funny, I just put up a review on cajun crawfish this morning - and ironically talked about the Boiling Crab in Alhambra - before I read this - over on yelp!

um...sorry to be an unpopular opinion on this post, but i think this is totally disgusting.

the helpless creature pictured above was boiled alive and probably suffered more than you or i could ever imagine. and this photograph of its sad little dead body (eyeballs and all) just creeps me out.

i really love laist, but glorification of such animal torture is FUCKED UP. and gross. that's my 2 cents, i know almost everyone reading this loves meat though. blech.

It's okay to have the unpopular opinion, it's okay to think that crawfish, seafood, meat, or any animal that is consumed is disgusting.

But to say this is a helpless creature being tortured is "fucked up" - is, well, stupid.

Is it helpless? Yes, is it tortured? Yeah a little. Does it suffer more than we'd ever imagine? Not at all. With all the real suffering in the world - kids in 3rd world countries that go without food for days, babies thrown in trashcans, homeless people who have nothing to drink but their own urine, people in abusive relationships that have no where to turn to so stay while a family member beats the living shit out of them - THAT'S fucked up.

A fish that allows mankind to continue to survive - killed for our consumption - is the way of the world. I suppose you are a vegetarian - and probably don't realize that it is not any different than the foods you eat. You think a plant that produces - say apples - that is nurtured everyday is excited when you pluck it from what it keeping it alive? It's okay to kill vegetables - which are living and growing things - but hey, animals that move around is somehow more torturous? Of all the suffering in the world, and you think THIS is "fucked up" ??? Well, I got an idea - don't eat anything that is tortured - don't eat anything you can plant, grow, or feed. What does that leave you with? I think that leaves you with just water. See how far that gets you.

phdiaz: just because there are humans going through awful things on this planet, doesn't mean this animal wasn't tortured. for you to bring up "kids in 3rd world countries that go without food for days, babies thrown in trashcans, homeless people who have nothing to drink but their own urine, people in abusive relationships that have no where to turn to so stay while a family member beats the living shit out of them..." is completely besides the point and VERY far off topic.

just because us humans don't know how to handle ourselves as a species doesn't mean we should boil animals alive. i don't see your point.

and for you to compare animals to vegetables in regards to being killed and/or feeling pain is completely ignorant. vegetables don't have a central nervous system. they DON'T FEEL SUFFERING, which is what this whole argument is about.

but hey, whatever, if you feel better eating boiled animals just because you can spout off some facts about how fucked up the world is...more power to you. bon appetit!

every meat-eating person knows that animals taste better when tortured. i insist that all of my steaks only come from waterboarded cattle.
