Your sleepless nights of anxiously awaiting an official announcement are over. After a plethora of postponements, swirling rumors and premature prattle, the 2009 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival roster is finally here.
At approximately 12:26 AM, festival organizers divulged one of the most highly anticipated line-ups of the year via their website. And this year's bill boasts an eclectic array of 120 some-odd acts, spanning both old and new. Prominent headliners from times past like Paul McCartney, Morrissey, the Cure, Leonard Cohen and My Bloody Valentine will all rock alongside contemporary artists like Franz Ferdinand, the Killers, TV on the Radio, Amy Winehouse, Thievery Corporation, Crystal Castles, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lupe Fiasco.
Of course, Los Angeles will be well represented by exemplary locals, such as X, Silversun Pickups, Peanut Butter Wolf, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, People Under The Stairs, No Age, the Airborne Toxic Event, thenewno2, the Aggrolites and the Knux.
The fine folks who organized this year's event have certainly put their money where their mouth is. We could die a happy website if we heard 1991's Loveless in its entirety, Morrissey with Johnny Marr and practically anything from 1979's Three Imaginary Boys. But we won't push our luck....
So was it worth the agonizingly long wait?

Nothing like getting Rick-Rolled by good ol' Pauly. Ah well, dispersing the elderly on a Friday gives everyone a more enjoyable weekend. Kudos GV, I'm actually looking forward to going this year.
Sidenote: Seems to me they really did try balancing out the bill this time.
No massive surprises, really, but the usual something for every flavor of altbro. Should be a good time in any case.
Where would Johnny Marr sneak in from? No convenient Modest Mouse co-billing to be found, at least.
Johnny Marr is with the Cribs now anyway, not Modest Mouse. ... Don't forget the Aggrolites in your local love. ... Lineup w/links at www.buzzbands.la ... And the number of the day is 204 -- the combined ages of Paul McCartney, Leonard Cohen and Booker T, all of whom are playing.
MBV were pretty incredible in Santa Monica last year, so yes, that'll be a good reprise. Although I'll miss hearing them in an indoor venue, where there is absolutely no escape from their relentless wall of noise.
Thanks re: the Cribs. I haven't been keeping up on my itinerant sidemen of indie rock.
Has Richard Thompson ever played Coachella? One can only dream...
MBV! Holy fucking shit. I missed them in October ( I even bought a ticket).
Other than that, I say I go through the list...
*YAWN*
I am actually pleasantly surprised by this line-up. Thank God there isn't any Jack Johnson headlining! And, Leonard Cohen - omg!!! With that said, I hate music festivals, so no go for me.
I'm with you. Holy shit Leonard Cohen! That's actually more impressive to me than Sir Paul.
Unfortunately the boyfriend has 2 kayaking tournaments in April AND his mom and sister are visiting during the week of Easter, and possibly want to go to Vegas. So I'm also not going this year.
Incredibly disappointed. The only bands I'd see are My Bloody Valentine, Morrissey, Gui Boratto and Crystal Castles (they seem like they would be pretty fun live).
Yawn. Wait, Amy Winehouse is still alive?!? Isn't she wanted for fraud in 12 states?
Would love to see many of these bands in a club setting. Nonetheless this will be good fun in the hot sun as always.
At the last Coachella appearance of The Cure, I heard this screamed about three songs in by a fan wearing a Disintegration T Shirt:
"Turn down the suck knob"
At moments like that, you simply have to acknowledge the man's hardcore level of fandom, and his disgust, with a standing ovation.
I've done Coachella as an average fan, as a person with hookups to the VIP area (nothing special, just a bit more shade and silicone), and with AAA Artist access. If you can go with the AAA, do it, otherwise enjoy the sweat, heat, dust, porta-potties overlapping sound, constant smoking (of various substances), and overall exhaustion, not forgetting the parking lot nightmare and the drive there and back from L.A.
Why fucking Indio? Seriously!?! Couldn't this sonic nightmare be done any closer, or cheaper?
Coachella really is a totally different experience when you have access to the chauffeured golf carts.
Overall, weak lineup. The Killers?
They need to switch it back to 2 days.
Wow, am I underwhelmed. Well, if VIP or Artist access falls into my lap, I'll think about packing up my car and heading out to Indio, but really, none of the rumored reunions? Except for MBV (who I saw back in October and who were *amazing* but all that sonic power will be lost in the desert) there's really no one that qualifies as a once-in-a-lifetime event.
Guess buying a ticket for the Blur reunion in Hyde Park was a good move after-all.
Can someone please tell me how Amy Winehouse can get past immigration leaving a wake of coke wrappers and Belvedere empties and Pete Doherty can't step foot here?
Agreed, Camacho, the bill is definitely well balanced this year. Makes it easier to validate the 3-day pass. But since I'm pinching pennies, I might just head up for Saturday for TVOTR, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Dr. Dog, Thievery Corp., Blitzen Trapper.
Bummed I'll miss the Black Keys, the one band I want to see live!
wow, what a thoroughly disappointing line up. i would love to get my $1000+ back that i already dropped on a hotel.
i mean, THE KILLERS? are you kidding me? blech.
Shame they couldn't get Animal Collective. Bland.
Huh. Interesting Line Up. I am a bit disappointed. I should have gone last year, Kraftwerk would have been worth the trip and $ way more than any day this year. IMO
Does anyone know if The Crystal Method is a Live set or is it going to be a DJ gig like usual. (Their website doesn't say yet)
worth it? NO
amy winehouse? really?
I appreciate the Latin alternative programming.
The good part about living in LA is we'll be able to see at least 95% of these bands some other time, without driving a million miles to the desert to stand in the sun for 3 days.
I'm diggin it. I think the lineup is great! People love to complain about certain artists, but if you don't like them, skip their set! the beauty of a fest like Coachella is that there's 5 acts playing at any given time, and odds are, at least 2-3 of them are pretty great
and Jackjood, I would have loved to seen Animal Collective too, but I think they played Coachella in 07 and 08, and 3 years in a row would be a little too much, dontcha think?
Actually, that's (one of) the problem(s) with Coachella as well. You want to see specific bands, and due to truly F***ED up scheduling, you have to pick and choose. That's a lot of money to get "bits" of a show.
Last year, I was trying to hear Mark Ronson, and hearing other bands completely obliterating his set sucked! Multiple stages = bad.
It was like hearing a bad DJ (insert any hip trendy DJ name here) try to play 4 records at once.
^^^ Can't get too much of a good thing!
Don't get me wrong... some very good artists rep'd. But I whole-heartedly agree (and always have) with comment #20.
Looks like a pretty solid lineup!
If you dont like it , dont go
hey thanks for the tip!
LOL!
I would go for Throbbing Gristle, Gang Gang Dance and Crystal Castles the most. But I won't, f*ck standing in the desert.
I don't know why I'm not excited about this at all. Why go to Coachella to see two or three bands I like play when I could just as easily see them inside a venue where I'm not sweating small children and paying in the triple digits.
Ticket price & weather aside, I'm guessing no one likes the comradery and experience of it all. Oh well.
