Blame the budget, the city every nickel and dime that you can spare, literally. Yesterday, the City Council's transportation committee recommended that the free hybrid parking at meters program should end on March 1st. The program was originally set to encourage people to buy the more eco-friendly hybrid vehicles. Now with hybrids a more ubiquitous sight and with parking prices increased, giving away a free metered space is much more of a loss--up to $4 per hour per space where a hybrid is parked. The full city council will take the issue up at a future meeting.

About freaking time.
While we're at it, can we ban them from the carpool lanes too?
Hybrids are not really that green, they get way too many perks. People actually car pooling even in a conventional car are being way more efficient. Hybrids don't need any help being popular, I see a Prius go by every few moments in Santa Monica, which is actually somewhat scary as a cyclist because they are like ninja cars.
One of the biggest environmental perks of the Prius is not the MPG but the PZEV (Parial Zero Emission Vehical) status. The Prius has a fuel bladder instead of a fuel tank which helps avoid the build-up of harmful gasses in the tank in between fill ups. The bladder expands and contracts as gas is added/used up which avoids excess space for fumes to accumulate. This way, when the gas cap is removed, less fumes are released into the air.
I was under the impression when I got my carpool lane sticker that the PZEV status was one of the main reasons why the Prius was considered for this benefit.
But lots of cars get PZEV status, like most new Subarus. Why don't they get special status?
Hybrids are a scam, pure and simple.
What we need are more bike lanes. Cars, for single-rider, "get to A-to-B" purposes, are completely inefficient.
Alex, it would take me over two hours to bike and use the metro to get from my house to work. It takes me half an hour by car that gets 30mpg freeway. How is a four hour commute completely inefficient? I try to walk and use public transportation when I can, but in a city as spread out as Los Angeles, that's not always possible or efficient.
I could park my Prius for free?
