Father in Murder-Suicide Had Considerable Debt

murder-suicide-family.jpg More details are coming out about Ervin Lupoe, who is suspected of killing himself after shooting his five children and wife at their Wilmington neighborhood home. He was at least one month behind in mortgage payments, owed the IRS $15,000 and had thousands of dollars out on credit, reports the Associated Press.

Lupoe and his wife were fired from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center West Los Angeles over a week ago after apparently lying about their income, which they did to quality for cheaper child care. In a fax to KABC, Lupoe blamed Kaiser.

The family was also planning to go to a relative's home in Kansas. Their car was already packed.

Where's John Steinbeck when you need him??

Why do some males with loads of debt and mouths to feed feel they have the right to kill their families? Thankfully, this is a rare event, but the loss of life and potential is enormous, completely illogical, and bewildering.

Is that a serious statement? You think only "males" kill their family members? Nevermind the "females" on PMS (Pre-murder-syndrome) that run over their babies because they won't stop crying. Or the ones that throw it in the trash or try to flush them down the toilet. That's completely illogical and bewildering, just like your statement.

I'll amend my statement. Why do males blast the brains out of their families where females like to poison?

Happy now?

what about the ones who drive them into a lake and tell everyone that they're kidnapped?

The father was a real scumbag. A history of frivolous lawsuits, and he wasn't laid off by Kaiser. He got fired after he was caught falsefying documents as part of a welfare scam.

Well, first, let's not make this into a man v. woman who's crazier forum. Please?

Second, I remember a story not too long ago about a man who did virtually the same thing in Porter Ranch. Someone suggested to me that it was a "cultural thing," meaning that, in their perspective, it would be more honorable to kill the family rather than let them live in the shade of debt. While I can understand it from a cultural perspective, my own brain just cannot fathom how anyone can kill an innocent child (er...kill anyone for that matter but especially a child...and their own child).

Last, am I the only one thinking that his debt really wasn't that bad? I mean, they didn't give any numbers on the credit card debt but, honestly, in the handful of times I've listened to Susie Orman I've heard people way worse off than him.

Bottom line is it's just terribly sad and traggic. No sense to be made of it whatsoever.

According to the letter the husband faxed to KABC the wife agreed to die with her husband.

"Lupoe wrote in the fax, "after a horrendous ordeal, my wife felt it better to end our lives; and why leave our children in someone else's hands ... we have no job and 5 children under 8 years with no place to go. So here we are.""

Perhaps he included that bit to save face. Perhaps it's true. Who knows.
