It's 6:30 a.m. and Hot Bagels Deli Mart in Sherman Oaks is quiet. Two men chat at the sole table, which acts as a community table of sorts, over coffee. It's cold outside for those who just woke up and a warm toasty bagel is just the right comfort food to warm the body up. Do you have a favorite bagel place to hit up in the mornings?

I usually buy a week's supply on Sat or Sun and take that to work. A half dozen whole wheat bagles $3, two containers of salmon cream cheese spread $5, red oinions and tomatos $2.
For a mere $10 I've got breakfast for the work week.
From where, jrb?
Ralph's
Or more specifically Ralph's for the bagles and creamcheese spread, Grand Central Mkt. for the onions and tomatos.
I did that last week, but got whole wheat bagels on sale. $2 for 6, plus $2 for onion and chive cream cheese. $0.67 a day for breakfast for 6 days. True, I have to toast them myself and they aren't great, but they are CHEAP and filling.
Sadly, the only choices I have near work at Western Bagels and Noahs (which isn't bad). My friend (from NY) swears Bagel Broker is the best. Not like NY, but good at least. :-)
New York City.
Are they better in NYC?
Maybe it's the family recipes from the oldest, and largest Jewish population in the US.
Little bit north of here, but Bagel Cafe, Isla Vista, CA
I don't necessarily know if it's my favorite, but I can definitely agree that Bagel Cafe was a very sobering breakfast spot after visiting my friends at UCSB from time to time.
Simply delicious goodness.
oh yum. i wonder if that veggie spread is vegan. i've not had a proper bagel with a cream cheese substitute since becoming vegan. :(
Sorry quarrygirl, this is not a vegan place by any means. The only place I've had vegan cream cheese on a probably not vegan bagel is at Tierra Cafe in downtown.
I love Bagel Broker on Beverly. Great bagels and yummy tuna salad too!
hey, that's my local bagel shop!
they changed owners recently and now the bagels aren't quite as good as they used to be. owners are nicer though, and the place is looking better now.
Hey Benjamin, yeah, I noticed different selections today. And yeah, they were super nice.
That's my spot, too. It's my "I made it to Friday" treat, since it's on the same block as my office.
the bagel place on larchmont
western bagel. hollyood way and verdugo in burbank.
not gonna blow your mind but it does the trick.
Bagel Nosh on Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica. Big, chewy bagels...usually still warm when you buy 'em.
If you're going to eat the equivalent of four slices of bread, you'd better love it.
i preferred this place with the surly owners. the new people are very nice, but the bagels have suffered.
any recommendations for better bagels in the area?
I'm not sure, riley. I tend to get bagels at M Street Coffee when I'm set up there for a good few hours to blog. They don't make them from scratch, though, just buy from somewhere else.
