A supergraphic at 10780 Santa Monica Blvd. Building tenants who paid for a great view of the mountains were not thrilled to have this over their windows. (Dennis Hathaway/BanBillboardBlight)
"Why haven't we heard a single word from Mayor Villaraigosa about protecting building tenants and the public from this appropriation of the city's visual landscape for commercial advertising?" That's Dennis Hathaway of BanBillboardBlight.org, an advocacy site that keeps current on the Los Angeles' billboard problems. Hathaway is referring to an LA Times editorial today that calls out Villaraigosa.
"Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has direct authority over city departments, so despite the city attorney's clueless settlements and the City Council's bumbling policies, it's Villaraigosa who has the power to act. He should, without delay," the Times heavily encouraged.
Last week, the paper went inside the buildings that had supergraphics on them. It wasn't a pretty sight. Imagine renting an office with a great view of the mountains, only for that view to be sold so an advertisers could hang a huge sign over your window. A couple of them, including the ING Direct sign, were taken down later in the week.

The new Pepsi logo is disgusting
looks like obama's logo.
what if it came down to either raising your rent or posting up a supergraphic over the building? hard economic times!!!!
what did you just smoke?
LOL
the good stuff.
guess i'm not the only one.
that must make you feel good. that someone else thinks the same asinine thing you do.
I live on Cherokee just north of Hollywood and out of my windows (4th floor) I see the Giant Statue Of Liberty Head that is on the TV GUide building. I'd take that over the Pepsi sign any day.
Lady AMC, with all due respect, the fact that you have a preference makes you part of the problem. You're either a shill, or you've fallen for the trap of the guy who has put up the Statue of Liberty heads.
The guy who has put up all those Lady Liberty billboards is doing this so that once those billboards are given the okay, he can then put up any other advertising billboards he wants... and any efforts to stop them can be considered anti-free speech. After all, why should the Statue of Liberty be allowed instead of a giant Pepsi ad?
It's the same situation with Billy the Elephant remaining confined at the LA Zoo despite the Mayor's promise (pre-election of course) to free him if elected. This Mayor is one of the most do-nothing Mayor's I can recall in LA history. He seems to be fine with just partying and mugging for the camera. If only there was an opponent who had some guts to do what he/she says.
