Weekend Movie Guide: I'm Back!

In anticipation of the Oscar Best Picture nod that never came, The Dark Knight is back in theaters today. If you are one of the 113 people who somehow didn't see this movie over the summer, now might be the time. You know how you can tell when a franchise is completely and utterly out of steam? When the star of the franchise stops appearing in the movies. Such is the case with Underworld: Rise of the Lycans which lacks the lovely Kate Beckinsale (but does at least add the equally lovely Rhona Mitra).

There is a lot of decent talent involved in Inkheart, but my overriding feeling is that this is just more kiddie dreck. Has Brendan Fraser -- so good in The Quiet American, Blast from the Past and Gods and Monsters -- completely given up on making quality films? If you like watching young people get naked and fuck, drink and do drugs and eventually hunt and kill each other then Donkey Punch is just the ticket. If Dark Backward-style horror is more your speed, then try Growing Out this weekend.

I may go see Dark Knight in the theater again while it's back out primarily because I'm still bent it didn't get a best picture Oscar nod, but also in the hopes it'll overtake Titanic for the No. 1 all-time box office spot.

Either way, I'm clearly a bitter, bitter man.

I wouldn't have minded seeing The Dark Knight elbow aside The Reader for a Best Picture nod. The absence of The Wrestler, though, was truly criminal. Either way, I can't imagine anyone winning other than Slumdog or Ben Button.
