To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, Blue Drums® in conjunction with Miles Davis Properties, LLC unveiled a limited-edition snare drum at the Vic Firth booth during the NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) convention last Saturday in Anaheim. Only fifty (50) Kind of Blue (KOB) 50th Anniversary snare drums are being produced by Blue Drums® in association with Miles Davis Properties, LLC.
Blue Drums® is a company of musicians that have worked with, interacted with, and been touched profoundly by their teacher and mentor, Miles D. Davis. It's a group of artists recognized by their contemporaries in their artistic accomplishment as well as in the instruments they choose to express their musical message. What better way to pay homage to Miles Davis than for the fraternity of his former drummers to collaborate together to make this commemorative "Kind of Blue" Snare Drum.
Legendary session drummer James Gadson, who has recorded with diverse artists such as Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, Paul McCartney and Beck, was presented with the third drum of the series at the unveiling.
The first drum was presented to drummer Jimmy Cobb, the sole surviving member of the legendary Kind of Blue sessions. The second drum was presented to drummer Vince Wilburn, Jr., the nephew of Miles Davis. The fourth drum will be presented to LAist tonight in our dreams.

That Vic Firth pic = the Barack "Hope" pose. It's sooo en vogue.
Funny. I was thinking the same exact thing.
Miles Davis is a legend and Kind of Blue is a landmark album, but a blue drum. Really? I've done a fair amount of shopping for snare drums over the years, and the color is probably the least important consideration. Even the rubber feet on the drum stand are more important than the color.
I have a bison snare, it's so loud, it's made for concert halls, so even to make it quiet is pretty loud for an apartment:(
FYI there is only one A in NAMM

I did not Miles played the snare drum. For all these years I thought it was a trumpet.
db... the company is called Blue Drum and this is one from the Kind of Blue series. That particular one was also the color blue, but they are not all blue. It was like the Cadillac of drums. There were many small changes in design, and the craftmanship just perfect. I want one and I'm not even a drummer.
Right, BStrad. His drummers made this drum in his honor. The first was presented to Jimmy Cobb, the Kind of Blue drummer...

His nephew pictured here, Vince Wilburn, Jr, is actually a drummer.
Thanks shess. Wrote this up after a long weekend at NAMM, which can put and extra A in anything. Fixed.
A Blue Drum for the "Kind of Blue" commemorative? I think it is "Kind of Stupid". What a waste. He doesn't even have any information on a web site on how to obtain one. What's his problem?
I can see a trumpet mfg. doing a Miles Davis Signature trumpet with special engraving, plating, etc., but a Snare drum? Get real. What a massive EGO TRIP Steve Badalament is on.
I think these music instrument mfg. are getting a little out of hand with using people's names that have been deceased in order to sell a product that may or may not have had their approval.
I don't know if Miles would have approved of this concept. He just doesn't seem the type of person that would have approved. But that's my take.
I checked out a photo of the $1,600 version. I don't know how they are going to sell these, but the snare strainer is a World Max Taiwanese cheapo snare strainer and the lugs also look like cheap Taiwanese lugs, etc. I wouldn't spend more than $500 on a drum of this type. I don't know what the more expensive drum has, but the $1,600 drum isn't that big of a deal in terms of the hardware used. I think it is just an expensive paint/plating job with Miles Davis' name on it.
