COMEDY
NY-based comedian Kumail Nanjiani performs his one man show "Unpronounceable" tonight at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Directed by The Aristrocrats’ director Paul Provenza, "Unpronounceable" chronicles Kumail’s Muslim upbringing in Pakistan and his move to Grinnell, Iowa, for college.
JAZZ*:
The great jazz label Blue Note is celebrating its 70th Anniversary with a tour stop at UCLA's Royce Hall tonight. “Subtitle 1” features musicians Bill Charlap, Peter Bernstein, Ravi Coltrane, Lewis Nash, Nicholas Payton, Peter Washington ands Steve Wilson. Pianist Charlap will lead the group on an exploration of classic jazz tunes by Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and many others.
CLASSICAL
Classical music junkies can get their fix tonight at 7 pm at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall for “Baroque Conversations 1” with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. The artists will introduce the music from the stage, share their insights and take questions at the end of the evening. The program includes Bach’s “Concerto for Keyboard No. 3 in D major,” “Concerto for Keyboard No. 5 in F minor” and “Suite No. 4 in D major.” There’s a pre-concert reception at 6 pm that’s free to all ticket holders.
FILM
Tonight In Cold Blood (1967) screens at 7:30 pm at the Egyptian. This black-and-white pseudo-documentary is based on Truman Capote’s true crime novel about the murder of a Kansas farm family by two thugs, played by Robert Blake and Scott Wilson. More than 40 years later, the film can still send shivers down your spine.
POETRY
The free Hammer Readings series continues tonight with poetry from Jim Shepard. The Williams College professor has written six novels, including Project X, and three story collections, including the recently Like You’d Understand, Anyway,. He’ll be in conversation tonight with event curator Mona Simpson, who authored Anywhere But Here. The event begins at 7 pm at the Hammer Museum.
