LA Lakers defeat Cleveland Cavaliers 105-88. I'll have more on this game later today, but the Lakers prove they are a tough team.
Minnesota Timberwolves defeat LA Clippers 94-86. I think it's really cute the Clippers try. Well when their entire team has gone down in injury, what do you expect?
Notable Notes
- Usually I'm very critical of broadcasters and announcers especially those from the Evil Four-Letter Network, but huge kudos go to the ESPN crew in Melbourne, Australia broadcasting the Australian Open. While they were busy alternating coverage between the Lleyton Hewitt-Fernando Gonzalez and Venus Williams-Angelique Kerber, they cut to a very compelling match on one of the outer courts. 16-year old American Christine McHale was in a tough match against the Aussie Jessica Moore. Tied 3-3 in the third set, McHale started cramping up very badly in the sweltering heat. So bad that after she served she couldn't move to hit the return. But somehow during all of the cramping she ended up winning the game and broke Moore on her serve. The cramping calmed down and she would go on and lose the set and match 9-7. But a very gutsy match by McHale, and a huge kudos to ESPN for allowing us to watch the conclusion of that match.
- With the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals meeting up in the Super Bowl, I thought it would be prudent to go back in history. In 1944 with World War II raging, the NFL decided to have the Steelers and Cardinals merge for the season. The Card-Pitts, as they were called, would go on and arguably be the worst team in NFL history. Not only did they not win a game going 0-10, they were outscored 328-108. They attempted two field goals missing both. They had a 31% completion percentage for eight touchdowns and 41 interceptions. They missed four of their fifteen extra points, and the punters had an record low 32.7 yards per kick. So while we get ready to crown a champion between the two teams, let's not forget the futility they once had a hand in.
