Looking for a reason to laugh nowadays? You've gotta check out the second season premiere of HBO's Flight of the Conchords tomorrow at 10pm.
If you know the show, you've probably already planned your screening party. And if you don't, your life is probably a little emptier because of that. Aw. The hilarious cult hit about two New Zealander musicians -- Bret and Jemaine -- trying to make it in the Big Apple, or at least trying to make a living, may not be garnering the duo the mainstream success they deserve but it sure has earned them quite a following. And that's in addition to their one obsessed fan on the show, Mel.
We ran into bunches of FotC fans at the screening party that was held at the Natural History Museum last Wednesday. Most were USC students who had read about the event on the school paper, all were young and hip and eager to partake of the free beer and wine (well those 21 and over).
The party was held in the grand foyer of the museum where the T Rex and triceratops skeletons are forever battling it out. But this meant that the room hit max capacity quickly leaving about a hundred people standing outside waiting to get in.
Inside, there wasn't really much going on except for the slow-moving lines to get food and drink and the scouting out of good vantage points of the big screen where they'd show the premiere episode on.
Later we discovered that behind one of the black partitions HBO was filming fans who were willing to lip sync to the fantastically difficult "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros." Apparently they would edit the best performances into a video and play it on the TV show.
"You want to do it?" the girl with the clipboard asked us. "Um, nope but can we take pictures of the people that do?" we countered. "Sure. We'll probably get more after more people drink," she said gesturing toward the drink line. But we only got to see a couple groups of friends rock this metropolis before the episode finally lit up the big screen, effectively silencing the room except for the uproarious laughter that ensued.
The following video is apparently the actual premiere episode; different from the one that was shown at the museum. The one we saw starts off with the boys dealing with their extreme poverty. Trust us, it's hilarious. But this one is good, too.

Glad SOMEone got in. I'd RSVP'd and arrived to a full parking lot and, eventually, informed that there were too many people in line - even those on the list - with no more room. I get that this is how these events are run in order to ensure a full house, but I think they overcompensated. A HUGE waste of time.
i got in, no hastle. but i was on the early side. after a while they seemed to stop asking for drink tickets.
I saw Bret at Wurstkuche in the downtown arts district last night. I was starstruck and couldnt work up the courage to say hi and ask for a picture.
