DVD Tuesday: Horses, Weed, Costner

I'm a huge fan of the revisionist Western movement currently threading its way through our culture, but didn't Deadwood do it so well that everything else feels tired (fine films like Appaloosa included)? Conversely, can anyone name a good Kevin Costner film in the last decade? And you can't say The Upside of Anger because he was just a co-star! Humboldt County is all about weed and freedom so this column approves purely on principle (review coming up very soon!). Two Tyler Perry movies in one week?! Who did I piss off?

Appaloosa

Humboldt County
My Best Friend's Girl
Family That Preys

Of course, we'll never know but who thinks that John Lennon--had he lived--would have ultimately licensed his music to sell Toyotas? 3 DVDs about the history of comedy in America? Yes, please! (but can we blur out Billy Crystal?) Bustin' Down the Door = surfing documentary = good = buy. I'm no fan of the trend whereby old horror flicks are re-released to DVD just as their re-makes are released into theaters, but at least the new iteration of My Bloody Valentine has the stones to go with an R-rating. Severed heads in 3-D--yay!

John Lennon - In Performance
Patti Smith Dream Of Life
Make 'Em Laugh: The Funny Business Of America
Bustin' Down the Door
My Bloody Valentine
Brideshead Revisited
