A second unrelated incident occurred Saturday morning when a man entered the airport to pick up his wife, according to LAX officials Police searched his vehicle and found two unregistered and unloaded shotguns (12-gauge and 20-gauge) as well as about 220 rounds of ammunition. The man told officers he recently went to a shooting range to fire the guns and forgot they were in his vehicle. The man was not arrested, but the guns were confiscated and he risks possible prosecution down the line. His name could also become part of a federal "watch list" database of sorts.
“While these are infrequent occurrences, it points to the success of the overall 'net of security' measures used by local, state and federal law enforcement at LAX---a process that actually begins before one enters the airport area,” said Sgt James Holcomb of the Los Angeles Airport Police.
On Friday, Phillip Dominguez, 47, of Orange County was arrested for bringing ten handguns, five rifles, an antique black-powder musket, and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition to LAX when he was supposedly picking up a friend before going to a shooting range. He plans to get vindicated for the arrest. “Like any recreational sport, like playing tennis or going to the gym or fishing, you may stop on the way to pick up a friend,” his lawyer told the OC Register. “There was nothing sinister going on or illegal, either.”

This is starting to feel a bit rehearsed, you know? Methinks we can look forward to an NRA challenge of certain gun laws soon.
Maybe I'm missing something, but how did the police know either man had the guns, especially when in one case they were in the guy's trunk? Random searches? Was either man acting suspiciously?
It looks to me like the Terrorist Safety Administration is just being more vigorous about stomping on the Fourth Amendment. There are so many people passing through LAX every day, it's inevitable that some of them will have guns in their cars. When I used to fly, I would have a gun in the taxi all the time, because how else are you going to get your luggage to the airport to check it...
There's no way to challenge any gun laws here, because these people aren't actually breaking any laws (note also that there's no such thing as registration of shotguns in California). This is the same thing as those photographers who get arrested for photographing bridges and train stations even though there's no law against doing so.
