Peep This Preview: photo l.a. 2009

It’s a big weekend for amateur shutterbugs, photographers, paparazzi and art admirers alike because photo l.a. is in town (well close enough to town - it’s being held at the Barker Hangar and other venues in Santa Monica through Sunday). The largest photo fair of its kind boasts more than 70 exhibiting galleries and dealers, featuring an array of early experimental images from the 1800s to modern photo art. (Check the gallery for a sampling).

One of the highlights of the weekend will be Saturday’s LACMA-sponsored conversation series with five Los Angeles-based artists. Throughout the day, LACMA photography curator Charlotte Cotton will informally interview artists -- David Maisel, Diane Keaton & Marvin Heiferman, Bruce Davidson, Susan Meiselas about their photography and contemporary publishing. These lectures will be held at the Ruskin Group Theatre, across the street from the Barker Hangar. Admission to these conversations is free, but tickets must be obtained one hour before each conversation at the photo l.a. box office.

We interviewed photo l.a. President/Director Stephen Cohen last week on Digital Village. He's very devoted to the art form, and although we don't talk about it in the interview, he's very keen on vernacular photography, which just tickles my photo-taking heart.
