FILM SEMINAR
Tonight at 7:30 pm at the Egyptian’s Spielberg Theatre is a DIY marketing seminar for filmmakers. After your film is finished, you’ll need to create a successful marketing campaign, including creating press kits and posters, press interaction, using Internet/social networking sites and more. There will also be a mini-panel discussion from journalists who regularly cover the festival circuit, including Anne Thompson (Variety) and Film Critic Robert Koehler (Variety). Bring your publicity materials in for evaluation. Ticket price: $20 General; $15 Student/Senior; $12 American Cinematheque members.
STORYTELLING
The monthly MOTH StorySLAM is tonight at El Cid from 7-9:30 pm. The theme is DIRT, and StorySLAM provides a venue for people to tell their own original stories. Stories are limited to five minutes, and 10 stories are heard and scored. The evening’s winner will later face off in a Moth GrandSLAM. $6.00
MUSICAL THEATRE
Tonight the Festival of New American Musicals continues tonight with a five-perforamce run of “A New Brain” at the El Portal Forum Theatre in Noho. The play begins at 8 pm and seats are $30 (with a $3.50 service fee). Directed by Patrick Pearson, the story’s based on the composer-lyricist William Finn's battle with a brain tumor.
PERFORMANCE*
The Hammer Museum presents “Paved Paradise Redux, The Songs of Joni Mitchell” by performance and visual artist John Kelly tonight at 8 pm. Kelly has presented works at the Tate Modern, the Whitney Biennial, Dance Theater Workshop, and the Drawing Center. We hear that Kelly is so much more than a Joni impersonator. We’d go just to hear him hit those high notes.
