Metro Looking to Expand Gold Line Further than East LA

When the Gold Line Eastside extension opens this summer whisking commuters from downtown to East LA, that won't be the end of the line if Metro gets their way. Metro staff has four light rail routes they are studying and proposing that would go from unincorporated East LA to the possibility of other cities such as Monterey Park, Whittier, Montebello, El Monte and others.

"Route selection for the extension has been somewhat controversial, and had been a point of debate during the battle over Measure R," explains Damien Newton at Streetsblog LA. "However, with the Draft Environmental Impact Statement now completed, we are one step closer to seeing the Gold Line penetrate deeper into the Eastside than its current alignment." The project is set to be heard at two meetings--a committee and the full board--later this month where its fate currently lays.

This is good news. I'm am one of those in the dead zone of Monterey Park and Montebello. It'd be great to have it service my area more conveniently provided I'm still living there when it is finally done.

And we'll have a train to get to yummy food in Monterey Park!

It should be light rail, not BRT, and should follow either Beverly or Whittier to downtown Whittier. If anything, it should not follow the 60 because there is very little around the 60.

this HAS to happen!! this would be AMAZING if it does. :)

i would be able to see my brothers without taking 3 different bus lines! it takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hrs transit time to see my brothers in whittier. this is LONG overdue MTA!!

I agree. BRT makes no sense. If rail lines will have any success in this town it must be as seamless as possible. Building the Orange Line and not extending the Red Line up the Chandler corridor was the biggest mistake ever.
