Officers were attacked 527 times up to December 23 of this year, according to the Los Angeles Police Protective League today. The total is the sum of 168 assaults with deadly weapons (14 with guns), 358 physical assaults and one death. SWAT member Randall Simmons was shot and killed last February in Winnetka when his team entered a home where a barricaded suspect was holding fort.
"These are not exchanges of gunfire between criminals and officers," said LAPPL President. "These are cold-blooded attempts to murder unsuspecting officers without any warning."
There were 635 attacks in 2007 and 624 in 2006.

Wasn't officer Simmons killed during "exchanges of gunfire between criminals and officers"?
Also, were there any numbers released about assaults by police on non-criminals, or suspects who turned out to be innocent? I mean, the city just settled the May Day in Macarthur Park incident for millions of dollars. How much better did they do in 2008 when it came to beating up people?
Finally, the LAPPL is hardly a non-interested party. Has anybody verified their numbers?
