December is list-making season. And for us music journalists, it is a time to look back on scores of albums, singles and remixes, reflect upon the music and recapitulate our favorites. But this year, just like the last, we took this opportunity to flip that tradition upside down, asking the artists that influenced us what influenced them. The prompt was not limited to that which came out in 2008.
Late-night techno trio Droog (Andrei, Brett and Justin) can be found at Avalon Hollywood where they hold it down Saturdays as well as at their various parties around town. Earlier this year they were the highlight of Beatportal’s LA Claims USA's Dance Music Crown.

2008 was quite brilliant in dance music, with some really creative directions taken. The biggest trend seemed to be return to house in many forms -- deep house, ‘90s house revival and a new twist on tribal rhythms. This was also the year of the vocal. More than ever "underground" dance music appeared fascinated with the humanizing effect of a well-placed vocal sample.
