Ride the Metro For Free Christmas & New Year's Eve

Ride the Metro For Free Christmas & New Year's EveOnce again, Metro will be offering free rides to transit users on Metro Bus and Rail lines Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. The free fare program runs from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. December 24th-25th and 31st to January 1st. According to Metro, "the free rides are being offered during this period to promote safety during the holiday season. Metro is an option for people attending holiday parties so they don’t have to drive." Unfortunately, Metro's late night weekend service on the Red Line ends December 27th, which means in the new year we're going to have to get a lot better at hailing cabs instead of climbing aboard the subway in the post-closing time hours.

Why the hell did they end the 3AM trains only a few days before NYE?! Couldn't they have just started the program a few days later?

I was under the impression that they'd be doing the 3am trains throughout the holiday season, until early January.

For the past few years trains have run 24 hours on NYE... is that not the case anymore?

It has been a real treat to ride the subway home at 2AM on the weekends after visiting bars/clubs and restaurants downtown. The people riding the subway, certainly fueled by a little alcohol but also by the camaraderie of riding the Metro together, are always talkative and friendly. A really unique LA experience. It's just too bad that this can't be a year around service. Or can it be?

skd echoes the sentiment of many! Run the Metro Rail late so that it actually serves people with active social lives! Imagine how much safer our streets would be if late night revelers had a decent transportation option.

Thanks for the added clarification about the NYE hours. But the FREE rides are only until 2 a.m.

And, yes, the late night Fri & Sat service sadly ends on the 27th. It would be wonderful to see this permanently implemented.
