Is Your Time Warner Internet Service Still Up & Down?

timewarner_internet.jpgLA Observed's Kevin Roderick couldn't post his daily Morning Buzz column at the time he wanted. "Cable outage; will post soon," he wrote. Almost two hours later, he finally posted the column. In an e-mail, Roderick said his service is Time Warner, saying that it has "been erratic the last few days."

Last week, many LAist readers agreed that Time Warner's internet service has been out of whack. In fact, major portions of the city were out for hours at at time for two or three nights in a row. Customer service, many said, was not helpful in solving, or at least, explaining what was happening.

One reason may be a law--AB 2987--that passed last year, finds Patrick Range McDonald in his story on public-access television. "City Hall’s loss of power over local franchise agreements — power that will now rest with the far-off state Public Utilities Commission — wipes out L.A.’s leverage to demand improved local customer service and programming," he wrote. Now Time Warner (and other providers) can pretty much get away with anything in terms of customer service.

Yes. Up and down is a very good description of my internet service- oy!

I haven't had any connection issues (early AM and evenings).

I'm using OpenDNS for my primary and secondary DNS servers, FWIW.

Over here in Westchester near the airport its been a bit shaky.

Up, Down, and All Around at both my place and my girls place. Horrendous.

Yup, still wonky. Especially during the high-traffic after-work hours.

Yep I'm in Redondo and both TV and Internet were out when I woke up this morning.

Also in Redondo. Been out since Saturday night! I am furious and will be switching services ASAP. I may have to return to dreaded DSL or something. I can't have this. In "peak" season, no internet.

Needless to say, during Fantasy Football PLAYOFF season this hurts even more. LOL (not really funny).

Any suggestions for new services available?

I'm in downtown and mine went down Sunday around 2pm and was down all day. Missed the Survivor finale (Yes, horrible, but it's such a guilty pleasure).

Was still down in the AM when I left for work, but when I got back around 5 it was up. Pretty annoying.

My TV has been fine, but my internet not. I switched my DNS servers to OpenDNS a week ago and I have had NO problems while everyone has still had tons. I recommend everyone do this:

Great... like Time Warner's customer service isn't already bad enough.

Customer Service? What customer service? You mean those people in India with american names? Why would a persopn born and bred in India name a child Sharon or Paul? So strange those Indians.

yes, getting peeved. Impossible to even contact them.

Hi all, new here. Anyway, Open DNS is GREAT!

A suggestion. In addition to changing your dns settings in your computer, if you have a router, chnage the dns settings there as well.

Some routers are easier than others to configure. My expereince is the AT&T/SBC/Pacific Bell 2Wire routers are fairly easy to change, while Verizon/GTE's Westell routers are a real pain in the ass.

I've also had favorable results with most Netgear routers.

Here's a link to Open DNS for more: https://www.opendns.com/smb/start/router/

Yesterday, my problem was with AT&T's DSL service during the early morning period from 6 to 10 am. Continual ups and downs. Must have been the rain.

For more on the Time Warner problem, great thread over at DSL Reports. The So_Cal slowness problem thread goes back to July of this year, but early this month is when the roof fell in. It's a very long thread. Start on page 27/28 for this months fun. No registration is required to post:

Anybody notice the $2.00 increase in your Road Runner service within the last month?

Too bad internet services are not regulated by the CPUC (only cable), but with enough complaints, I am sure the California Attorney General will step in.
