Metrolink to Begin Implementing Safety-Focused Changes

Yesterday Metrolink revealed their plan to combat their "most pressing safety and organizational issues," reports the Glendale News-Press. The findings were presented to the transit company's Board of Directors by a combined team of experts concerning trains and oversight; the pursuit of greater safety at Metrolink largely stems from the aftermath of September's Chatsworth crash--the deadliest accident in Metrolink's history.

Among the suggestions were that Metrolink improve their culture of safety , create "a strategic safety leadership team” involving people from multiple transit agencies in the state, increase their oversight of their contractors, improve all facets of communication, fill vacant positions where the employee could help bring about positive changes, and that they work to improve technological functions pertaining to safety and potential hazards, including the installation of Positive Train Control. The panel presented numerous suggestions, which, according to officials, "include some steep challenges" and will most likely come at a very expensive cost. It is expected that funds from the recently-passed Measure R will be put towards implementing some of these changes.

After September's crash, Metrolink finds itself unable to balk at putting a price tag on safety and the public's peace of mind. Metrolink expects to see these changes implemented in the next six-months to four-years, depending on the specifics of each step of the plan.
