Over at the blog, LA Snark, there's talk of terrible local internet service: "What’s going on with Time Warner’s internet outtages in the Los Angeles area? Are they clocking out at 10pm or something? For the past two nights I’ve suddenly lost the ability to reach a site in a browser. Oddly enough I’m able to instant message and receive emails.. but no web access. What’s the deal Time Warner?" The snarky blogger polled his Twitter followers and found that he wasn't the only one. Is the same happening to you? Update: KCAL News at 4 p.m. reports that the problem began on Sunday night and should be now fixed.

Yes, it's been happening to me all week.
Luckily, I will be done with Time Warner by this time next week!
Me too... and it was out a few days last week.
Absolutely! Half of my friend's IM status messages reflect TW's suckiness, and upon texting my computer-tech friend late Monday night that I had broken the internet, he promptly called back, assured he wasn't the only one. And yea, those symptoms seem right, web browser doesn't work but other things do. It seems to be city-wide. What are the chances we could get like, a $5 discount out of this??
happening in san diego too
Grrrrrr. Yes, it's been happening to me intermittently.
It made the news? Wow. Slow news week!
Time Warner is apparently having some sort of DNS problems, which is why you are able to stay connected to many IM services even after you lose the ability to access webpages.
Its lame.
happening to me out in the IE too
Looks like a DNS outage, if I set my DNS to 4.2.2.2 it worked
It is in fact an DNS issue. To fix it switch your DNS servers to something else. Personally I moved to OpenDNS. Their servers are:
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220
Cheers
I called them last night to express annoyance and was told "well, Hawaii is out too!" as if that was supposed to make me feel better. After almost 24 hours of no internet it finally came back last night around 9 p.m.
It happened to me once this week. I'm on the far west side.
Open Control Panel and select "Network and Internet Connections." Next, select "Network Connections" near the bottom of that dialog box. Find "Local Area Connection" and RIGHT click on it; a popup should appear. From the popup select "repair."
You'll see a dialog listing the checks and repairs. The control panel window will disappear on its own.
This checks the DNS entry and repairs it if possible. This fixed the problem for me.
Yeah, it's happened to me in north OC the last two nights as well. Bah.
It's defiantly a DNS issue... i can connect to websites via their IP when it goes down.
Time Warner has always had DNS problems every year or so, they really need to get their act together.
My firefox stopped working today, it was sooooooooooo fucking slow. Then I switched to Safari and all is well.
But I have AT&T
mine blacked out two nights ago. i called and went through the entire automated system to try to get a human and then they just said, "sorry your call cannot be completed right now" and then hung up on me.
when will we get complete FIOS service?
Everyone I know in the San Fernando Valley with Time Warner has been out for the past two nights as well.
Yes, I was wondering WTf! Right around 10 PM. had me messing with my router all night.
And I agree about Verizon Fios. Bring it on!!
That would definitely be annoying, but after reading the comments on this post - it really concerns me about how worked up and anxious people get over being temporarily discounted from their virtual world for 9 hours.
As long as the internet lose isn't affecting work, maybe use your renewed free time to read, go out, watch tv, catch up on sleep or call friends to chat?
I feel so much better now - I thought I was going crazy!!! The last few evenings it's been slow as shit in Sherman Oaks.
No wonder I couldnt get on Xbox Live last night!
NERD ----->
It happened to me a while back but I switched to OpenDNS and it's worked perfectly ever since.
Fios. Want!
Thank you LAist for solving another great mystery that's been driving me crazy.
Those Time-Warner A-holes never even mentioned any type of system outage at all, let alone one spanning all the way to Hawaii.
It's not DNS the routers are congested as hell. Do some traceroutes. I've been emailing them traceroutes for months and, honestly, they don't care. Try calling in for real entertainment as they ask you to clear your "brauza kesh".
Also, see this for hundreds of complaints:

SAME OLD, SAME OLD...
They actually replaced my cable line!
mine just went out for about 15 minutes and came back just now... again...
i called time warner last night...the good news is that they said that when the internet is back up and running fully to call them back with the hours that the internet was not working and they will give me a credit off of my next bill. everyone needs to do this even if it is a few bucks.
I had the same problems yesterday starting around 9:30:
(1)Gradual slowing of internet service
(2)Browser service dies, email still works (Gmail POP) - 30 min later
(3)Total loss of internet service - 5 min later
I have had this problem intermittently for the past 3-4 months. The best part is when you call Time-Warner, their automated recording at some point says something to the effect of "If you are not able to access the internet, there is no need to call us. We know there is a problem and we are trying to fix it." Wonderful. That helps me and my home business.
We have had cables exchanged, new modems installed, credit given... no changes. I think boogan has a good idea, but Time Warner isn't going to change because of credits given.
DOES anyone know of any internet alternatives in Los Angeles, namely smaller DSL/Broadband service providers that are reliable and helpful??? I will switch in a second.
markus
Sukram, my experience matches yours. They don't care.
I'm going to do Verizon FIOS if I renew my lease in my current place.
I've been seeing the same flaky connectivity the last couple nights and I'm in Chino Hills.
My Condo Complex in Culver Lost service for four days. Everyday they promised it would be another hour and 'fixed for good'. That was really assuring. I can't wait for FIOS. Time Warner should be booted from the city. Criminals!!!!
Ah! That's been happening to me and usually several reboots of my router and cable modem made the difference. I assumed something was wrong with my hardware. Either that or Villaraigosa was messing with me.
it happened to me too...but it ALWAYS happens. this is defintely not the first time. stupid time warner...
Boy I thought Charter was bad. I'm counting my blessings now.
Major DNS hiccups every evening this week.
no fucking wonder!!
it was working fine one minute and couldn't open anything the next - it was so frustrating.
