TV Junkie: NBC Plan Could Undermine Conan

Hugh Laurie as Dr. HouseSo everyone's seen that NBC is offering Leno a 10:00pm program after he hands off "The Tonight Show" to Conan in the Spring. NBC is trying to protect an aging segment of its audience by doing this and the end result is that they are going to undermine Conan O'Brien's takeover of "The Tonight Show". Since a good percentage of viewership can get Leno at 10pm, NBC is creating a disincentive for viewers to try out the new version of the show as helmed by Conan. This begs the question: don't Republicans have enough late night TV options? Isn't that what Glenn Beck is for?

BTW - last night Jimmy Fallon intro'd his house band for the new "Late Night" next year.

It's a Hugh Laurie kind of night.

The TV Junkie Plan: "House" (a very special, holiday-theme, Dr. House will melt your heart - Hugh Laurie on Conan later), Samuel Jackson AMC Tribute (he follows the path of the righteous man), Conan

8:00pm House FOX - House and the team treat a teenager who collapsed during her high school Christmas program

9:00pm Dirty Jobs Discovery - Mike cleans out a Connecticut lake and then travels to Pennsylvania to a gourd farm.

10:00pm The Real Housewives of Orange County Bravo - Tamra and Simon celebrate their ten-year wedding anniversary; Jeana attempts to re-build her life after her separation

10:00pm The Bad Girls Club Oxygen - Despite getting off to a rocky start, the girls band together for a night of speed dating. Did we mention these bad girls are living in an LA mansion?

10:00pm Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force A&E - Series Premiere.

10:00pm Samuel L. Jackson: An American Cinematheque Tribute AMC - Snakes on the muthaf***in' plane!!

10:00pm Leverage TNT - New time slot premiere

10:00pm A Shot at Love MTV - Season Premiere

11:00pm Frank TV TBS - Season Finale

12:35am Late Night With Conan O'Brien NBC - Actor Hugh Laurie; comic Joel McHale; the Gaslight Anthem performs.

When is it not a Hugh Laurie kind of night?

don't Republicans have enough late night TV options? - THATS FUNNY!

time for some vicodin ... washed down with scotch.

The suits at NBC must be on something better than vicodin and scotch if they think I'll watch Jay Leno in the 10 pm slot if I don't watch him now. They should give him 5 pm daily so that all his viewers can catch the program when they get home from their early bird dinner specials.

I guess they decided to stop making terrible shows and start making...terrible talk tv.

Damn. You'd with all the cash that GE/Universal/NBC has on hand they'd be able to buy a clue.

Leno's center-left or left of center, but he's hardly conservative.

Here's a good take on his political views from the 2004 election cycle:

Actually Leno has been letting his hair down a bit since his days hosting the Tonight Show are numbered. But with this new announcement, he may have to regain his button-down persona.

It's probably impossible to get anyone under 30 to watch Leno (the Conan O'Brien demographic), and Jay's monologues can be 'hacky', but when he interviews political guests (e.g. Chris Matthews, Brian Williams), he's actually quite good.

Personally, I'm glad to have Leno on at 10:00pm. Looking at TV Junkie's recommendations for the 10:00pm hour, I wouldn't waste my time watching any of those reality shows, and I'll take a pass on "Leverage" based on the concept alone.

Also, I could never make it to 11:30pm to watch any late night talk shows(I always fall asleep), and it will save me having to TiVo the show to play back the next evening.

thanks for your comments everyone.

sithandra, you bring up some good points but let's look at a couple things. It could be argued that Leno appears to be left-of-center if you are a resident of Kansas or one of the racist red-belt states that choke the middle of the nation, so yeah, I'll give you that one. Leno [blah blah] Leno - he's for old people and that's not good for what NBC needs to do and not committing to Conan isn't what NBC needs to do.

How great for Leno to finally let his hair down, maybe he could take his jaw in a bit as well.

Next let's talk about TV Junkie: My recommendations for a potentially watchable stream is in "The TV Junkie Plan", and I suggest you sign onto the plan because I'm a much better and more gifted human being than you are and you evidently could learn a couple things. The listed items are new programming of note for the evening or something else that deserves a highlight. It's mostly premieres and finales or something LA area related. A couple examples of which are "The Real Housewives of Orange County" or "Bad Girls Club" which highlights its LA location."Leverage" got a mention because it was premiering in a new time slot.

I hope these explanations shed some light for you and I hope that you realize that the TV Junkie is just here to help.

Happy Viewing!
