Loud neon fashions and iconic 80's skaters including Tony Hawk and Christian Hosoi collided head-on for a nostalgic day at the Quiksilver Headquarters in Huntington Beach on Saturday. Skating legend Tony Hawk participated in his first competition in eight years and showed that hasn't lost a step by winning the contest with style. Not just style, but class, as he forfeited his $1,980 winnings by giving $200 to each non-placing competitor.
There was a fashion angle to the event, with Quiksilver displaying some vintage threads from back in the day as well as some of the upcoming 2009 collection, influenced by the day-glo 80's look. Skaters and fans were encouraged to wear 80's gear and many obliged, including Hawk, who dug out his old pink Powell skateboard to compliment his multi-colored shorts and the blue t-shirt he wore in the skate film, "The Search for Animal Chin." For the finishing touch, he spent two hours getting his hair highlighted just like the old days.
"We gotta ride the real deal here," Hawk insisted.
Even the tricks that the skaters pulled off on the massive vertical ramp (built specially for the occasion) were ripped from the 80's playbook, with Hawk sending the competition to another level each time he projected himself up the wall for a fully extended invert or some crazy mid-air board juggling.
When the dust settled, this is how they placed.

Very nice Mike. Took me back to my skater days. Keep the pictures coming.
Glad you guys like the event. Unfortunately, it was a private event and could not be promoted ahead of time. You can check out more pictures and video of the event on the Quiksilver blog...

We also have coverage of the 80's street contest we did over the summer.
Wow, now I feel REALLY lucky.
I love that Christian Hosoi is is wearing multiple (slightly fancier than Swatches) watches. I assume it's part of his 80s look, but if not it's equally hilarious and seems like a very him thing to do.
I should have said more in my first comment. It was a private event because of permit's and other issues. It would have been rad to open it up to everybody, it just wasn't possible. That's why there is only post-event coverage.
Again, glad everyone is taking the time to comment and say good things about the event. It was cool to see all the legends back together looking like it was the 80's again. Hope everyone gets a chance to check out all the video's on the Quiksilver blog.
windsor woooods.
