Box Office Review: Two for Four

Since the weekend following Thanksgiving is an historically slow one for business, the major studios were hesitant to release anything on Friday. As a result, the witless Four Christmases topped the box-office again ($18.1M/$70.8M). Twilight regained some footing after a steep drop last week ($13.1M/$138.5M) while Bolt sank ($9.6M/$79.2M). Australia will struggle to recoup its $130M cost ($7M/$30.8M) unlike Quantum of Solace ($6.6M/$151.4M) and Madagascar 2 ($5.1M/$165.6M) which are both certified hits.

Transporter 3 endured a precipitous drop in its second week ($4.5M/$25.3M) but still managed to top newcomers Punisher: War Zone ($4M) and Cadillac Records ($3.5M). Sneaky hit Role Models looks to be surviving on good word of mouth and rounded out the top 10 ($2.6M/$61.6M). The limited release crowd was led by Frost/Nixon which pulled in an astonishing $60,000 per theater. The spectacularly bad Nobel Son ended up on the opposite end of the spectrum as it only averaged an abysmal $415 per venue.

Its a shame about Australia, saw it at the weekend and loved it. You owe it to yourself if you have loved anything Mr Luhrmann has done, to go see it. Absolutely awesome.
