After a bit over a month of inactivity, the Galaxy took on Edgar Davids, Christian Karembeu and the rest of the Oceania All-Stars in front of 16,600 fans in Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday, local time.
Recently reacquired forward Jovan Kirovski opened the scoring early on for the Galaxy when he converted at the 3rd minute on a setup by fellow forward Alan Gordon. The Galaxy never looked back, dominating the game on strong play by midfielders Eddie Lewis and David Beckham. By the 32nd minute, Gordon and midfielder Brandon McDonald had added to the tally, giving the blue-and-gold a 3 - 0 lead which held until the final whistle.
The match -- an exhibition game for both sides -- is mostly a marketing exercise for the blue-and-gold, but allowed younger players to get some playing time. Tristan Bowen, Bryan Jordan, Mike Muñoz, Julian Valentin and trialist Leonard Griffin all participated, giving head coach Bruce Arena an opportunity to see them in action before the winter break, and more importantly, before he makes any offseason moves.
Now that both the Galaxy and Chivas USA are officially on their winter break, focus shifts a bit towards our national teams. The U.S. Men's U-17 National Team is wrapping up action in the Development Academy Winter Showcase at the Lancaster National Soccer Center. The academy helps develop and showcase young talent and features 220 matches over the span of four days which began on Friday. It also includes the Nike International Series matches, featuring the U-17 squads from Australia, Brazil and the U.S, which has been split into 2 teams. On Friday, U.S. and Brazil kicked off the action as the showcase got under way. The verde amarela proved to be too much for the U.S. and the Brazilians notched a 3 - 0 victory. However, the U.S. will have another crack at them this afternoon.
While the U-17 Men's team is busy in Lancaster, Fontana native Shannon Boxx and the rest of the U.S. Women's National Team are setting up shop at the Home Depot Center. Boxx and friends will face China on Saturday as part of the Achieve Your Gold tour, celebrating the Americans' Gold medal triumph in the Beijing Olympics earlier this year. After this match, soccer action will not return to the Home Depot Center until January 8, 2009, when Interliga 2009 group action comes to town.
Lastly, UCLA's women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1 - 0 loss to North Carolina on Friday evening. The loss not only ended the lady Bruins' awesome undefeated season, but also eliminated them from the NCAA College Cup tournament.
