Preview of the New Heath Los Angeles Store

Since 1948 Heath Ceramics has been an icon of California design. In 2003, husband and wife team, Robin Petravic and Catherine Bailey, purchased the company. Their shared mission was to revitalize the company, by placing a strong emphasis on design, while preserving Edith Heath’s handcrafted techniques and legacy. They continue to make the classic designs and new ones with the highest level of craftsmanship and quality.

The Heath Headquarters and factory are in Sausalito. The new Los Angeles location on Beverly Boulevard at Sierra Bonita opens this weekend. The 5,000 square foot space features sales of all of Heath products. Adam Silverman of Atwater Pottery joins the company and will move his studio into the store. The gallery features a patio and garden that will be available for events. The newly renovated space is designed by Commune Design.

In the last days of construction, the company was nice enough to open it's door for us to get a sneak peak. We asked Adam Silverman about his collaboration with Heath and his shared vision for the future of the company.

LAist: How did you become involved with the Heath Company?

Adam Silverman: We met a a pottery function here in Los Angeles about four years ago. We struck up a friendship- that turned into we should do something together. We knew we had a lot of similar interests. We hit on the idea of building a store down here and having my studio in the store. This would be a satellite for the company here. We started looking for a place last winter and found this location in the spring. We merged Atwater Pottery into Heath. So now everything that I make has both marks on it. I can do small run production here. With the set up at this studio a designer can come in and order a full line of dishes for a restaurant and custom pieces for hotels.

LAist: What is your goal for the collaboration?

Adam Silverman: To work with the company to do new things. The company has an amazing legacy. There are so many extensions that make sense from what that have as a foundation. More vases, planters, lighting fixtures. We have a really nice shared vision of things that interest us. We all believe in American manufacturing and trying to do things locally pay people properly and do the right thing. Ultimately I'd like to see another factory down here, another example of a well run factory with people being paid well to prove that a good quality deign based company exists in America.

Heath Los Angeles will have open studio hours this weekend from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. The Heath Los Angeles Studio & Store is located at 7525 Beverly Boulevard at Sierra Bonita Avenue.
