The LA Zoo Elephant Controversy from the Zoo's Side

Brenda Scott Royce, director of publications for the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association, sounded off this weekend at Huffington Post about all the elephant talk going on these days. Animal activists and Councilman Tony Cardenas want the exhibit currently under construction to halt work and have a search a large expansive elephant sanctuary. Royce, along with others, believe the exhibit is just fine. Their point of view has not gotten as much press, so here's some of it.

"Zoos accredited by the American Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) not only adhere to a very strict set of animal care guidelines--much stricter than the USDA licensing requirements for sanctuaries--they also work tirelessly toward the bigger picture: the survival of species," writes Royce. "The Los Angeles Zoo is in the middle of constructing an expansive elephant habitat that will be bigger than the gorgeous facility at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, yet the aforementioned well-intentioned but under-informed people have repeatedly attempted to derail the project in favor of sending Billy to a sanctuary, even a theoretical sanctuary that has yet to be designed, built, or tested."

Thanks for posting this. I was perceiving something of an anti-zoo bias derived from LAist's recent posts on the subject that primarily focused on the pro-sanctuary side of the elephant issue, and I appreciate some balance being brought.

No worries, Will. I just didn't have much info to go from on their side until now.

Earlier this month, we called the LA Zoo press office and the woman who answered said they didn't have time for blogs. I called back and spoke to someone very nice and left a message, but still haven't heard back.

So hopefully they will actually contact me.

And to GLAZA's credit, their PR person rocks! It's just the internal LA City employees who have not shined yet.
