Pencil This In: (Day Without) Art

READING: LA resident Rachel Resnick reads from her new book Love Junkie today at the Barnes & Noble Santa Monica at 7 pm. The memoir is a woman's self-exploration of how a childhood led to a self-destructive addiction to love and sex.

(DAY WITHOUT) ART:: Today marks the J. Paul Getty Museum's 19th annual observance of a Day Without Art. On this day, the international arts community pauses to remember and respond to the AIDS crisis and its impact on cultural life. As part of the day, the Getty will showcase Memory Trees, Shrouded Work of Art and Spotlight Talks.

DANCE: The Margaret Jenkins Dance Company presents CHIME LIVE! tonight at 8 pm at Farmlab. It’s a free evening of performances with the 2008 CHIME dance artists in Southern California (Simone Forti and Rae Shao-Lan Blum; Rosanna Gamson and Bradley Michaud; and David Roussève and Olivier Tarpaga). Since the program’s inception, more than 50 California choreographers have received funding and have established new relationships with fellow community artists in order to elevate the choreographic experience.

MUSIC: There’s an evening of Afro-Cuban music, dance and video tonight at Pomona College’s Lyman Hall at 8 pm. Pomona College’s Afro-Cuban Ensemble, directed by Joseph Addington, comprises the first half of the program. The second half features a multimedia performance with video, dance and drumming created and choreographed by Judith Davies.

REMEMBER: Tonight is the 15th Annual Noche De Las Memorias at the AIDS Monument in Lincoln Park tonight at 7 pm. Mexico’s Consul General in Los Angeles, Juan Marcos Gutierrez, will join hundreds of families, community residents and people concerned about the HIV/AIDS at the Wall Las Memorias to remember those lost to AIDS and renew their commitment in the fight against the disease.
