About that High Speed Train to Las Vegas

With all the talk of Prop 1a passing--partially funding the High Speed Rail between Southern and Northern California--there is little talk about the high speed train being planned by a collection of smaller outlying cities in Los Angeles County that they say will serve "shorter-distance intra-regional commuter [between Palmdale and Irvine], airport access and other non-work trips within Los Angeles and Orange Counties."

With 5-10 minute headways between 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., the privately built and operated magnetic levitation train (MagLev) will glide passengers through the region at an average 90 mph with planners hoping that someday the line will be built to Las Vegas' CityCenter project.

They're building a new website and last week the board voted in the Cerritos Mayor Pro-tem as Chairman of the Joint Power Authority that they are calling the Orangeline Development Authority (not to be confused with Metro's Orange Line). As far as this becoming a reality, a "project development plan" on their website (.pdf) predicts construction beginning in 2012 with the train operating in 2015. That doesn't feel likely, but hey, it's nice to dream.

All I'm sayin' is, there needs to be a high speed train to Mammoth.

Where are they going to get the water to supply an under-track park like that in the *desert*. I sure hope that pic is just illustrating the principle of the thing and not a projected reality. Vegas sucks away too much water as it is.

That aside, I'll be first in line for a ticket.

damian_z, Umm...If you live in Southern California you live in the DESERT! Southern California gets water from Lake Mead, and a good amount of energy created by Hoover Dam is used to pumped that water to Southern California. Las Vegas isn't far from the Colorado River and Lake Mead (largest man made lake, if you didn't know). Southern California should be on the same water restrictions as people living in Clark County, Nevada.

Why wouldn't you pay for a train to Vegas? It's on California soil, so why should another state pay for it? That makes no sense.

I love this idea and I'll definitely consider taking it.

I'd rather pay for a train to Vegas than one from Van Nuys to UCLA...

Running a supped up Amtrak train like the Acela to Vegas would be a lot faster then driving, and a million times cheaper then building a flashy mag-lev track.

The proposed line that goes south from Downtown L.A. to Orange County is the same path Metro wants for its own use (line 1K).

With Prop1A passed, a lot of this seems more silly then ever. Mag-lev is not at this time very cost effective, is incompatible with other train systems, and only moderately faster. A huge stretch of their proposal is redundant with the CA HSR route. If they want to continue with region connections the CA HSR would not connect, they should be working together to use compatible trains so we can create a cohesive system.
