Very interesting, since the Militant took a car-free trip to San Diego this past weekend -- and vlogged it.

edgreenberg: Actually it's three bicycles PER CAR, though not every car is equipped with bike racks. There are at least two coach cars in each PS train that accommodate bike racks.

There's also code V363 that gives college students 25% off. There's a number of other discounts at: http://www.railserve.com/amtrak_coupons.html

One should be cautious. The Pacific Surfliner only holds three bicycles per train. Those bringing their own bicycle may find themselves left behind at the station.

That said, it'd be a terrific trip.

We did the same thing last month. We brought our bikes on Amtrak and biked everywhere from the house we were staying at in Montecito to the Botanic Garden. Biking up to the garden was tough, but thanks to the great bike lanes all over Santa Barbara, the rest was easy.
