The New Math: Hollywood + Prop 8 = ?

Should Hollywood shun and boycott businesses who supported Prop 8?Today's LA Times asks a pressing question: "Should there be boycotts, blacklists, firings or de facto shunning of those who supported Proposition 8?"

This question has surfaced in the wake of recent high-profile "outing" of Prop 8 supporters and the subsequent consumer and community backlash, like in the case of local eatery El Coyote. But the Times is making a rather pointed connection to the post-Prop 8 fallout, namely the relationship between "liberal Hollywood" and the controversial ballot measuring limiting the definition of marriage to that between a man and woman only and outlawing same-sex marriage.

They point to the numerous rumblings about pro-Prop 8 industry insiders, starting with "Scott Eckern, director of the nonprofit California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, who resigned after a flurry of complaints from prominent theater artists, including "Hairspray" composer Marc Shaiman, when word of his contribution to the Yes on 8 campaign surfaced," and adding others to the growing list like "Film Independent, the nonprofit arts organization that puts on both the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Spirit Awards; the Cinemark theater chain; and the Sundance Film Festival."

So what is the connection between Hollywood and what is largely (and over-generally) referred to as gay activism?

The LA Times explains:

For many in Hollywood, the Proposition 8 backlash represents a troubling clash of free speech, religious beliefs and the right to fight intolerance. Many supporters of same-sex marriage view the state constitutional amendment as codified bigotry, a rollback of civil liberties for gays and lesbians.
Hollywood, long thought of as the oddball, bohemian, "anything goes," Bacchanalian world of heathens and left-wing wing nuts, also just happens to wield a lot of power and money in this town, and, to some extent, in the world.

On the local level, there remains uncertainty about just how much the anti-Prop 8 movement will cost Hollywoodites; it has already cost someone like Eckern his job, and it may mean that there will be a lot fewer films shown at the Los Angeles Film Festival next year--filmmakers like Greg Araki won't let his films play at the fest, while others are taking a more cautious approach, like producing duo Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, who are poised to release Milk, a film about landmark gay politician Harvey Milk. Cohen also urges everyone to "proceed with caution" when it comes to reacting to Prop 8, chiefly when it comes to boycotts and finger-pointing.

For others the math is a matter of plain old dollars and cents, like Chad Griffin, a political advisor to Hollywood executives who told the Times:

"A dollar to the yes campaign is a dollar in support of bigotry, homophobia and discrimination. There are going to be consequences. Any individual who has held homophobic views and who has gone public by writing a check, you can expect to be publicly judged. Many can expect to pay a price for a long time to come"
No matter how you approach the problem, there is no easy formula to solve the unbalanced equations that Prop 8 presents: Right and wrong, left and right, politics and religion, freedom of speech and bigotry, money and power, church and state, or gay and straight.

Wow, we agreed upon something.

However, that will not close the door that you opened and the incomprehensible stuff you brought upon yourself. It will not be coincidence.

It appears that gays and those that pledge their allegiance to them and their cause are the only ones that have any rights. Apparently they are the only ones that can practice free speech and they are the ones that are right and any one against them is wrong, homophobic and will be judged, fined, or even fired!!! This is backward thinking and illegal. You can't fire someone who is against gay marriage just like you can't fire someone who is gay. You can't force your opinions and lifestyle on the majority or those that don't agree with you. Californian's have already spoken. If gays can over turn everything by violence, force, marching or by getting two or three judges to change what millions of people voted on and the majority said "YES" on, what's the use of even voting? Just because a few celebrities speak out for gay rights doesn't mean God has spoken. They are just celebrities--they get paid to entertain--they are good at acting. What do they really know about the Bible? Obviously nothing if they are for gay marriage. If this is overturned again, then this system does not work. Then anyone with enough money and a little muscle can manipulate and bully his way to win. Gays can come together in a civil union and leave the CHRISTIAN marriage ceremony out of the equation. Why would anyone want to be a part of something that they want nothing to do with? This makes no sense. Gays can be together as a couple, collect benefits and do what they want in their own homes but they don't need to use the word marriage as this is from God and God is against same sex marriage. They can use another word. Create their own religion. Why must they continue to try to change Christianity, which is actually what it comes down to. According to gays, heterosexuals are allowed to express opinions as long as they are the same as gays, as gays opinion and rights are the only ones that count. Believing in traditional, Christian, heterosexual marriage doesn't make you a bigot, homophobic or discriminatory--it just makes you a Christian and I'm proud to serve a loving God who does love all people, but hates sin and will not bless the practice of homosexuality. Just as parents will always love their children, but they won't tell you, "Okay, because I love you, you can go against God's word. And because I love you, you can break the law--we'll just change the law and then your sin or crime will be acceptable to all people, therefore you won't be doing wrong anymore. And if anyone tries to go against us, we'll beat them up, fire them or cry discrimination." We can't just say we believe in God and ignore what he says about homosexuality. We can't just pick and chose certain scriptures and then leave others out. God loves His children--his believers but he does not love sin. And if people love God, they will not side with the side of this sinful practice. Why is it always about what can be done for us and not what we can do for God? Still, the majority of people that voted Yes on Prop 8 would leave the judging of homosexuality to God and actually, just want gays to leave the WORD "marriage" out of their equation. Most Christians actually don't want to judge gays but can't go against their own faith. Many straight people don't even want to get married today but would rather just "live together." Many get married just to be "right with God." Getting "married" as a homosexual couple will not make them right with God. Gays already receive same-sex couples insurance benefits so to me, its all about winning the fight and gaining acceptance of their lifestyle. But no matter if Prop 8 is overturned or not, God will never accept it and nether will His children and many traditional marriage supporters. Marriage is a Holy Christian Matrimony between a man and a woman. Civil unions are for those who don't believe in Christianity.

Well said.

It is no wonder that these same people who tongue in cheek claim discrimination and homophobia, are the ones sending anthrax to churches, defacing churches, and reacting with bigotry and hate to those who express their free speech about their beliefs.

A belief that has been around long before they decided that they were born to mount a man of the same sex from the rear or for a woman to strap a dildo and have sex with another woman and pretend to be a man while claiming to be born that way.

If they had their way, then a heterosexual man having sex with four women that he impregnates should have the right to marry each one simultaneously. They would make the argument that it was for the children and each woman deserves the civil right to be married to the father of their children.

you are mentally ill. Get help.
I am sure your family probably avoids you like teh plague.

ps --
Jesus didn't like marriage. He told his followers to leave their parents, children, wives and husbands and follow him and prepare for the end of times. (and that was 2000 years ago!)
Poor Jesus of Nazareth sounds like a bi-polar, political dissident Cult Leader to me.

CIVIL MARRIAGE EQUALITY FOR ALL CITIZENS !!
gay, straught, black , white
Marriage is a civil right

PantheonZeus-
No, I am sure that your dad found your butt hole at an early age. The help available to your queer is called Reparative Therapy which is designed to fix your deranged mental confusion. PENIS + VAGINA = NORMAL SEX.

You are no only a bigot, but an idiot.
You forgot to include pedophiles, bestiality, incest, polygamy, along with sexual activities among people of the same sex.

Read my lips fool- Marriage is not a civil right for queers marrying queers, parents marrying children, siblings marrying siblings, and the marriage of multiple partners and for that matter a straight man that wants to marry anothet straight man for financial reasons is also prohibited.

Who are you fooling? Gay = ostricized from family and normal people. They may love you, but they pray for your sick azz. PERVERT= the perversion of what is normal. Sharing shit is not mormal. Sick bastard.

To ksac916: AGAIN I SAY GREAT POST.

It is all politics and crap. Dianne Feinstein had a neutral stance on Prop 8 up until Oct. 2008, when Gang banger Villaingosa announced he would run for Governor and opposed Prop 8. The Demcratic platform was to oppose Prop 8.

The campaign by No on 8 people is fully draped in lies. The media does not report that El Coyote restaurant on Beverly Blvd, despite the boycotts is the busiest restaurant on Beverly Blvd. It is frequented by gays and families alike.

The media did not report that most gays in West Hollywood considered the "Day Without a Gay" thing a joke and laughed at the thought of missing work for such nonsense. As a matter of fact, on Wednesday there were more gays in El Coyote restaurant around 8 o'clock than there were gays marching in West Hollywood.
