Weekend Movie Guide: Buy Advance Tickets!

No one is really sure what's going to happen at the box office with Twilight this weekend. My personal take is that it will radically over-perform the early guesses of ~$45M. America, never underestimate the desire and resolve of teenage girls. Didn't you learn anything from Titanic?! Bolt is worth seeing just to hear the grating but hilarious voice of Susie Essman. The addition of Miley Cyrus to the cast, however, is pure Hollywood marketing evil! I Can't Think Straight = forbidden and hot Middle Eastern lesbianism.

Okay, but Titanic appealed to people other than teenage girls. Not that this necessarily doesn't, as I'm in my mid-20s... but everyone who's not a teenage girl who sees it won't be fooling themselves that this is anything BUT a romance for teenage girls. Marketing gurus in the industry are usually pretty right-on. That's what they get paid to do. Especially at this time of year, you won't see any movies breaking the $100 mil mark. That's what summer is all about. Fall is usually for serious pieces and oscar contenders. This will probably do $40 to $50 million. It doesn't have anywhere near the large appeal of Quantum of Solace, which brought in $70 million. Do you know if they will be making the sequels? Or are they waiting to see how this performs? I think $50 mil on opening weekend is more than decent, depending on how much it cost.

msmerymac--

check out the story on Variety right now about the weekend box-office prospects of Twilight. it is killing it as we speak. they are expecting $30M in the first day alone! (including last night's midnight showing). i'm going to go ahead and put my guess in--Twilight will make $65M this weekend. we'll know on Sunday afternoon.
