MOCA Possibly Seeking Bailout from LACMA

MOCA could fold into LACMAAfter news of MOCA's extreme financial situation, Culture Monster at the LA Times is hearing that MOCA will possibly "approach the Los Angeles County Museum of Art about a merger, which will effectively mean a transfer of MOCA's extraordinary collection to the Mid-Wilshire complex." Another art blogger believes LACMA would be more than willing to say "yes" to the offer.

bailout is quickly becoming one of the top words of 2008, right below subprime.

Noooooooo!

So much of what I loved about MOCA is that they were kind of the anti-LACMA. LACMA is corporate, and MOCA's always been more innovative and cutting edge (due, of course, in large part to the nature of their art). Plus, they ran a great membership program.

MOCA was founded as the anti-LACMA, in part because LACMA was very old-line (read: Christian) Los Angeles. MOCA was the upstart competition...this would be a real loss for cultural dialogue in the arts in the city!
