Orange Line to Chatsworth Could be Running by 2013

Orange Line to ChatsworthIf it gets prioritized funding, the Metro Orange Line's swoop to the north from Canoga Park to the Chatsworth Train Station could begin construction in 2010 and be in operation by 2013, finds Curbed LA. Four new stations will be added and every other westbound bus from North Hollywood will travel the new route. The Gold Line extension to East LA will open next year and the Expo Line from downtown to Culver City is expected to open in 2010.

interesting orientation on that map... isn't north normally on the top?

not in, oh my god, the Valley!

This also means 4 more miles of that great bike path right?

It seams that the comments on this blog are more intelligent than what is coming from the MTA. The Orange Bus Line was a failure from the start. It could not begin to handle the required ridership. The busses are small and cramped inside, rough riding and very difficult to handle a wheelchair. Capacity can not be increased do to blocking traffic on the cross streets. It now takes twice as long to make the trip than it would if it were a light rail line. The idea of throwing good money after bad for this ill conceived extension of this bus line is almost criminal. If there is such a need for this service why isn’t the Orange Bus Line running now on Canoga Ave to the MetroLink Chatsworth transit center? How much time will be saved by running the bus on the right of way instead on Canoga Ave?

Because of the busses being so full with a cramped uncomfortable ride, many people who would be riding a LRT line are now driving.

The Orange Bus Line needs to be upgraded to a LRT line or extend the Red Line to Canoga Park and Chatsworth. Not one more cent should be spent on this bus line it needs to be upgraded ASAP.

The Red Line can run above ground and even have grade crossing as many heavy rail lines have across our country and around the world. IF a LRT line, it should fun from the Burbank LRT station to the Chatsworth station.

Stop this poorly conceived idea of extending the Orange Bus Line to Chatsworth except on Canoga Ave.

Buses are ideal for local lower density travel, but after a point they become less effective. There is less up front cost in doing a BRT project like the Orange Line, but it will never match the speed, capacity, and comfort of light rail. To use a biology metaphor, I think a sound transit system needs rail at it's core and arteries, and buses fan from it like capillary veins. Right now we are trying to shove too much blood into veins that don't have the capacity to handle it.
