Tea Fire in Santa Barbara Caused by Illegal Bonfire

Tea Fire in Santa Barbara caused by campfireOfficials today announced the cause of the Tea Fire, which ignited on Thursday night, burning through today and destroying 210 homes and scorching 1,940 acres between Montecito and Santa Barbara. A group of 10 young men built a bonfire on Wednesday evening, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department. The men left on Thursday morning under the impression the fire was out, but it was not 100%. The winds and weather conditions that day sparked the fire back up into the huge wildfire Thursday evening. Campfires were not allowed at the time the men were there.

Bloody hell, people are idiots.

ugh. don't these people watch tv and see the smokey the bear commercials?!

Er, wasn't there a red flag warning in effect last week? Which should clue everyone into the fact that the weather is hot and dry, and brush fires are likely? So that starting a fire outside is NOT a good idea?

How is it that the fire officials always figure out the cause of a fire? I'm always amazed that they come up with an answer.

In this case, these individuals should be held accountable for their actions. No jail, no fine, but forever indebted. Garnish 51% of their future income.
