It seems Saturday's National Prop 8 protest in all 50 states was a tipping point. Not the same tipping point that beget large passionate protests and rallies on a daily basis outside the Mormon Temple in Westwood, but the type of tipping point where people are done protesting and now starting to put the pieces back together, plan for the next move and wait (but yes, protests are still going to happen no matter what).
And boycotts and waiting seem to be what's next, especially the latter, exemplified yesterday by Attorney General Jerry Brown's statement regarding Prop 8 cases pending on the desks of the California Supreme Court. But that one is not in the hands of the people who want to take action now.
And for those who want to effect change immediately, boycotts and pressure on businesses are gaining speed. El Coyote was at the forefront of this issue last week, but there's been talk of Sundance and the LA Film Festival, a protest is planned at El Pollo Loco in Silver Lake on Wednesday night and Subway Restaurants have already reacted to pressure.
And the biggest boycott, in a sense, has yet to come.
Joel Stein's column in the LA Times about "No Gays For a Day" (no shopping, no working, no nothing) is now a reality. Amy Balliett, who organized the National Protests on Saturday, is helping plan "Day Without a Gay" on Dec. 10 and is focused on keeping the conversation going in hopes of national reform.
"There's this statistic out there that 10 percent of the population is gay. There are 301 million people in this county; that means 30 million of us are gay," she told the Seattle PI. "If 30 million of us are in that community, and if every single one of us takes time out to have 10 conversations with someone who is not like-minded, someone who doesn't understand this cause, then we can change this country."

For whatever its worth, and those reading my posts know I fully support boycotting as a basic right, let's please be sure to boycott the people or business' at issue. Not a business simply because an employee was a contributor. A business can not dictate what an employee does with their earnings.

Yes on 8 was successful in removing marriage equality from California's state constitution.
Rogers found the contribution on a list of Yes on 8 contributors compiled by the Human Rights Campaign. "When I saw a franchisee of an international company gave $2,500 to opponents of equality, I immediately knew I would require someone at the company's world HQ to address this."

I'm amused at the hate that is being spewed from the gay mafia. Intimidate, intimidate, intimidate. Make sure everyone thinks the same way that you do. Never mind that the same people who you now admittedly hate love and respect you to no end. I hope someone from El Coyote offered you some food while you were there "protesting." Because that is the way that family is no matter how much you spit on them.
Keep alienating yourselves from the voting majority please. Keep beating up old ladies in front of churches. Keep sending fake anthrax letters... and definitely please keep ignoring the thoughtful and sincere questions that have been posed over and over during that last 6 months.

sees the light of day and they are outed (ie: Marjorie at El Coyote and her secret donation that harmed her gay staff and patrons) -- they go into "victim" mode and it becomes all about poor me.

Fake anthrax letters should really be a non-issue here, it's just as likely that the Yes on 8 people did it to make No on 8 look bad. No way to prove it either way. My girlfriend works in radio news, and because of the talk radio shows in her building they get fake anthrax letters all the time. They take a casual coffee break and come back after the all clear is given.
I also have to say it's pretty amusing this idea of the "gay mafia", which I've heard from two people now. I'll have to tell my gay friends they are part of the mafia now. You know because going to a protest makes you part of an organized crime ring.
