Yes on 8 Claims to be Victim of Civil Rights Violations

civilrightsprop8.jpg“People have a right to participate in the electoral process without fear of intimidation or harassment,” Meg Waters of the Yes On 8 headquarters in Orange County told WeHo News in an investigation of the campaign's claim that their civil rights were violated. To that, Executive director of UCLA’s Williams Institute, Harvard-educated attorney Brad Sears said "They do like to play the victim. The right to participate without fear is not a right that’s recognized by any state constitution, and certainly not in the United States’ Constitution. The right to vote is a recognized right, but it isn’t people who voted being targeted, but those who gave money.” Both the FBI and US District Attorney's Office said they have received no reports about said civil rights violations.

So they think they're civil rights are being violated. They should follow this train of thought to its logical conclusion, which is ...because they violated the civil rights of others. Pot, meet kettle.

Brad Sears is right. There's nothing illegal in boycotting those who gave money to a campaign. It's called "Dealing with the consequences of your decisions."

"They do like to play the victim." pretty much sums it all up.

and the example of where their civil rights were violated is.....? oh that's right, we're using our civil right to free speech and assembly to violate your civil right to not be complained to?

Let's just say the prop 8 proponents started it, so we'll finish it.

My eyes are oh-so-dry dry from the lack of tears I've shed over their plight.

I thought it was bad enough that they had signs printed up that said "Prop 8=Religious Freedom." It just goes to show you you can spin any argument your way, even if it's absolutely mind-bogglingly wrong.

Dan Savage an AC360 said this re: Mormons claiming to be victims:

DAN SAVAGE: Part of the democratic process is if you're going to throw a punch you're going to have a punch thrown back. You don't get to march in the public square, slime people, malign people and demagogue against people and then jump behind a bush and say, no God we're a church. You can't criticize us. You can't bring it back to our front doors and say we have a problem with what you've been saying about us in public and doing to us in the public square.

The Mormon Church has politicized itself with this movement and -- in California to ban same-sex marriage. And it wasn't just the Mormon Church encouraged its followers. The first prophet of the Mormon Church had a letter read from every temple, every Mormon temple in the land instructing its members as a religious duty to donate time and money to this campaign. You cannot campaign against the vulnerable minority group in this country in the political arena without expecting some sort of response"
