Each November, Civil War reenactors gather in Moorpark to take part in Southern California's largest yearly Civil War event, called "The Blue and the Gray." And they keep it real—from the clothes they wear to the campsites (yes, they even sleep there!) The event usually takes place right before Veteran's Day, and many of the reenactment participants are veterans.
Last weekend, attendees were treated to good food, one-of-a-kind shops and educational demonstrations. Of course, the main event consisted of battle reenactments, and this year's engagements included Seven Pines, Oak Grove, Mechanicsville, and the two battles LAist attended, Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill.

Tractors, buildings, etc in the background really take away from an otherwise authentic display and re-enactment. I can't imagine being in those uniforms in our hot, dry climate - seeing something like this Virginia or elsewhere on the East Coast would add to the authenticity - although it's plenty hot there (in the summers).
