Jenny Owen Youngs

Last Monday, New Jersey-based singer-songwriter and Perez Hilton favorite Jenny Owen Youngs (MySpace) -- previously mentioned here -- headlined at the Hotel Cafe (MySpace) in Hollywood. Opening for her was local singer-songwriter Greg Laswell (MySpace) and Minneapolis-based The Abdomen (MySpace).

Laswell, whose recent music video for "How the Day Sounds" was filmed with actor Elijah Wood at Galco's Soda Pop Stop in Highland Park, packed the room early and included his cover on piano of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun".

Youngs, whose previous Southern California appearance was a year ago at Bordello, entertained the crowd with her usual comedic banter in-between songs, although they seemed to be largely unfamiliar with her personality, as evidenced by their nonplussed reaction to several jokes and references to skull fucking. It was a tough crowd, but she breezed through the challenge with ease.

This show was also the first stop of Youngs' tour with Laswell, which runs through November 20th in Indianapolis, and her still-untitled sophomore album is scheduled to street in early 2009.

Special thanks to The Abdomen, Greg Laswell, Jenny Owen Youngs, and the Hotel Cafe.

Hey, really enjoy LAist. I live in the LA area and thought I'd just let you guys know about this show that's coming up at The Echo. I got wind of this guy named Rodriguez recently from a friend. He's been around for a long time, but just had his first album reissued and is now touring in support of it. This dude is in his mid-60s and this is the first time he's played west of Detroit. It's weird like psych folk soul and is really pretty amazing.

He's playing in LA on the 21st at The Echo and SF on the 23rd at The Great American Music Hall (with The Entrance Band).

I don't know, I hadn't heard anything about it very many of the local blogs and thought that I'd just spread the word as I thought people would really interested in this.

Hope this gets a few more folk out at the show.
