Okay this really makes me want to get an emergency kit put together sooner rather than later. Growing up in Southern California, one has a tendency to be kind of blasé about earthquakes, but they really are terrifying.

i dunno saltmine, i understand what you're saying... all i know is that those are the numbers that the gov't crunched and that scientists have projected based on all the information they have. we should take it up with the usgs i suppose, haha. but i do know 300,000 buildings damaged would account for all those homes/structures that may only have cracks and other minor damage, etc...

And? 300,000 buildings are supposed to be damaged. That, plus 1500 collapsed buildings, plus infrastructure damage, plus people caught outside, would amount to a hell of a lot more than 1,800 deaths and 53,000 injuries. Either the projections on human damage are too low or the projections on structural damage are too high.

the numbers given are those projected by the scientists over at the us geological survey... keep in mind that although only 1,800 casualties are predicted, 53,300 is the number of injured.
